George Smitherman, Rick Mercer and other Canadian gays appear in It Gets Better video series

Tim Gunn did one. Hillary Clinton did one. Hell, Barack Obama did one. Seems as though making an It Gets Better video has become the kindness trend of the year, and Canadian celebrity gays refuse to be left behind. A new video released yesterday features Rick Mercer, Rex Harrington, Diane Flacks, George Smitherman (still sadly wearing his mayoral campaign button), Tommy Smythe, Enza Anderson, the cast of MTV’s 1g5g, Joeffer Caoc, David Dixon, Deb Pearce and Peter Fallico all discussing how much their lives improved as they came out, grew up and gained confidence. The It Gets Better project was kicked off a few months ago by American sex columnist Dan Savage as a reaction to a spike in suicides among teenage homosexuals. The videos assure young gay people that existence improves as life goes on.

The Brick Works debuts as a fashion show venue

Spotted: models at the Brick Works

We already get organic purple carrots and Jamie Kennedy french fries there on weekends, but the Evergreen Brick Works moved from food to fashion last night with its debut as a show venue. Audi presented the collections of Joeffer Caoc, Dimitri Chris and Nada in the massive kilns building, which will be used as a gallery for art exhibitions and installations. It’s an amazing venue, but last night the hangar-like space was unheated, and as the temperature plunged, host Glen Baxter of Fashion Television laughed, “It’s so cold I can see my breath.” Us too, Glen.

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Last night, Evan Biddell launched two weeks of fashion shows and industry events in Toronto with a show held at a factory on Wilson Avenue (check out the photos in our slide show below). The clothes, which played with proportion (armour was an inspiration), will be on display during LG fashion week, which begins on Monday.

Also showing this week, ahead of the official schedule, are Philip Sparks (he’ll be debuting his women’s line tonight), Nada, Dimitrichris, Joeffer Caoc, Ashley Rowe and Greta Constantine.

Jeanne Beker can’t afford to shop at the Bay’s luxury department

Jeanne Beker is almost the Canadian answer to Anna Wintour: she’s one of the most recognizable faces in our fashion industry, is on a first-name basis with designers and has thick bangs, but, unlike Wintour, Beker is friendly and open. Case in point, the grand dame of Fashion Television gave a lengthy interview to Kelly Anderson of blogTO.com, in which she divulged three (somewhat) juicy details about her shopping habits.

Just Opened: Dolce Social Ballroom, condoland’s new dance club, goes after 30-somethings

The ladies of Dolce (Photos by Karon Liu)

Yet another dance club at King and Bathurst awaits downtown condo dwellers who made it to this side of the recession with some cash in their pockets. Dolce Social Ballroom, which opened this past weekend, is the latest venture from Travis Agresti—the man who, at 22 years old, linked up with Vince Carter to open Kai and Inside Entertainment Complex (all three are now history). Agresti is back, having spent 16 months and $2 million merging an Indian restaurant with a derelict lounge to create Dolce, a venue aimed squarely at mature partiers (dubbed “sophisticats” in press materials). “It seems there is a lack of nightclubs for the 30-something crowd to let loose in. You’ve got kiddie-land on Richmond and pockets here and there on Ossington, but that’s about it,” says Agresti, himself 28 years old. “We’re trying to discourage the younger crowd who spray champagne and go wild.”

Tom Ford will design for women again, faux-hawks for babies, designers ditch Toronto fashion week

66ème Festival de Venise (Mostra)

Rejoice: Tom Ford returns to womenswear (Photo by Nicolas Genin)

• Sure, swine flu is going around, but that’s no reason to be impolite. As fashion week presses on, Torontonians continue to embrace the oh-so-European double-cheek kiss as their preferred greeting. May we suggest Cold FX? [Toronto Star]

Tom Ford has confirmed he will be creating a line of womenswear for his eponymous label. Cue sighs from everyone who thinks Gucci hasn’t been the same without the dreamy designer. Ford is waiting for financing before launching, but some sources say the line could be ready as early as fall 2010. [WWD]

• We’ve already got babies in Che Guevara tees, Uggs and Canada Goose jackets, and now we’ll be able to artfully faux-hawk their hair thanks to Le Baby Hair Gel. Free of such irritants as fragrance and parabens, the gel is safe to use on baby scalps, and perfect for taming annoying frizzies and fly-aways. [Bella Sugar]

MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor is vegan, but not like Pamela Anderson

Sarah Taylor at the PETA party

Last night, Tryst night club reeked of Axe body spray, imported beers were $7 and the hors d’oeuvres (fruit plates and crudités platters) were vegan. Ah, yes, another film festival party that had nothing to do with movies. This one was Toronto’s first-ever bash for PETA and was hosted by MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor.

A fashion show featured Canadian designers like Joeffer Caoc and cruelty-free clothing, including some takes on the lettuce bikinis PETA supporters often wear. Models looked they had stepped straight out of Maxim, enormous breasts and blond hair included.

We caught up with Taylor, who immediately asked us if we were wearing leather shoes. “Are you wearing fur?” she continued. We joked about having 12 mink coats at home but she didn’t seem amused. “I’m vegan. This is a cause I really believe in,” said Taylor. “I’m all about cruelty-free products.” When we asked if she was hoping to be Toronto’s Pamela Anderson (a huge supporter of PETA), she replied, “Looking down at my chest, I’d say no.”
