Coco Rocha to appear in Greta Constantine show tonight

(Image: Louis Vuitton)

A-list models are usually the calling card of the Joe Fresh Style show (see: Crystal Renn, Irina Lazareanu), but at tonight’s Greta Constantine presentation, Coco Rocha will strut her stuff. Rocha—who’s also appeared in the Joe show and on runways for Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Marc Jacobs—is a long-time friend of GC designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong and approached the duo about appearing in their show. She’ll also host a party in celebration of Canadian fashion on Monday at the Roosevelt Room. Look for photos of the show and Rocha here on Monday.

Lucian Matis takes it to the max with his fall collection

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Lucian Matis consistently puts out one of the most interesting collections of fashion week, but despite being a finalist on the first season of Project Runway Canada, his show on Thursday was quiet. There were a few notable guests—model Stacey McKenzie, who was a regular sight at the Allstream Centre, Ainsley Kerr and Monika Schnarre—but the crowd was nothing compared to the Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style shows the night before. The clothes were maximalist, with ballooning shoulders and hips, intricate beading, busy patterns and lace. The collection was a feast for the eyes; too bad more eyes weren’t there to see it.

Toronto society turns out for the Joe Fresh show and celeb model Crystal Renn

Model Crystal Renn (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Joe Fresh Style, as we all know, is the show to see and be seen at each season. And, since it conveniently follows the Pink Tartan show (conveniently designed by Mrs. Joe Fresh, Kimberley Newport-Mimran), most of fashionable Toronto society—Galen Jr. and Alexandra Weston, Lynda Reeves, Tommy Ton, Jian Ghomeshi, Tanya Kim, Trevor Born, Susur Lee and so on—turned up to have their photo taken by George Pimentel, their names bold-faced by Shinan Govani and to pledge allegiance to the Mimran fan club. A big-name model always opens Joe; this year, it was the very gorgeous, very trendy and very famous “plus-size” model Crystal Renn (quotation marks are necessary, since Renn was hardly any larger than the other models) and one of the faces of the ’90s grunge scene, Kirsten Owen. Oh, there were clothes, too (view them in our slide show below), but who goes to Joe for the clothes, anyway?

Andy Spade takes on Hudson’s Bay Company branding

Partners and Spade products for HBC (Photo via partnersandspade.com)

Many Canadians are proud of the Hudson’s Bay Company, passing the striped wool blankets and coats on as heirlooms, but there’s one New York ideas man who thinks our patriotic staples—and their founding company—are in need of an upgrade. Andy Spade, the husband of trendy tote maker Kate, has taken on a new hobby of late: under the banner Partners and Spade, he is re-imagining tried-and-true branding images of big retail institutions. Also on his long list are California’s Swanson winery and Target, which he will infuse with some of the imagination that helped the couple’s own brand succeed.

Finally, some movement on the proposed deal between Ryerson University and Loblaw to rejuvenate Maple Leaf Gardens. Today the federal government said it would give $20 million to the project (the rest of the costs are to be shared by Rye High and the grocer), which will include the construction of an athletic centre, with a rink for the school hockey team.

Joe Fresh Style show causes quite the commotion

Theodora Richards for Joe Fresh Style (Photo by Jenna Marie Wakani)

It’s almost unbelievable what a kerfuffle the Joe Fresh Style show causes at fashion week. It is one of the most well-attended shows, with extra-tight security before the event and a late start that had even Ben Mulroney squished while waiting in the crowd. Model Theodora Richards, daughter of Keith, opened the show and upped the star wattage, though she lost her shoe on the first walk. The show was a good reminder of the supremacy of affordable, attainable style, which, in this case, just about anyone can pick up at their local supermarket. The line’s designer, Joe Mimran, presented a pastel collection of schoolyard-chic pieces. There were sheer knee-highs, checked bloomers (hello, Bo Peep), wee purses and pink gingham shirts.

Like his wife did in her Pink Tartan collection, Mimran made underwear outerwear: a checked bra over a sheer top was paired with bloomers, and super-short shorts were, dare we say, panty-like. A few of the pieces looked suspiciously like one of Pink Tartan’s. But never mind—we’re happy we can score Joe Fresh’s sheer rosette tees for $16.

See all the looks from the collection after the jump, and check out Fashion’s interview with the designer here.

Makeup under $10 that doesn’t suck

lip-stain

Joe Fresh lip stains. From left: peach, candy, sheer pink and watermelon.

It’s easy to believe that the cosmetics industry is recession proof—on Saturdays, Sephora stores are full of women forking out $30 for a tube of Dior mascara or Laura Mercier lip gloss—but we’ve found makeup that doesn’t require a taking out a second mortgage to purchase. Supermarket fashion label Joe Fresh launched a makeup collection last spring, and like its clothing line, the products are incredibly inexpensive (nothing is over $8). We liked all the cosmetics, but the strawberry-scented lip stains stood out. Available in six shades, the stains dry with a matte finish and do not come off on cups. We found that sheer pink gives a natural look, peach and candy provide richer colour, and watermelon and apple are great for more drama (wear them alone or under gloss for additional depth). The best part: they’re $6 each, a price tag that might just be worth switching cosmetics stores for.
