Shafted! (Or, our requisite article on how Canada fared in the 2011 Oscar nominations)

Incendies (bottom) got the nod; Ryan Gosling didn't

When the Oscar nominations came out this morning, we scrolled right past the laundry list of best picture nods (that 10-picture system still irks us) to the best actor category. Despite all of our hopes, Ryan Gosling was unlisted. We weren’t the only ones who thought the Academy would tap the Goz for his portrayal of a hard-living husband in Blue Valentine. Early Vegas odds had given the young actor +5,000 odds of taking home the trophy on the big night (not the greatest odds, but at least he had odds). Instead, it’s a showdown between Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, James Franco and Colin Firth.

The way we see it, James Franco stole Gosling’s spot. On paper, they’re kind of the same actor—quirky, drawn to challenging roles despite their leading-man looks—and with Eisenberg also under 30 31, it’s possible Oscar was in danger of appearing a bit short in the tooth. In related news, Blue Valentine was overlooked for best picture (presumably to leave room for Toy Story 3), but Gosling’s co-star, Michelle Williams, was nominated. So at least if she wins, we can expect to hear the Ontario boy’s name in her acceptance speech.

The best and worst of TIFF 2009

The after party for The Men Who Stare at Goats. Not many people can say they were at a house party on the Bridle Path with George Clooney and Jeff Bridges.

TIFF is toast for 2009, so we asked our team of writers and photographers report back on the best and worst, the scary and the sublime, the hot and the lame of this year’s festival. Here are their harrowing responses.

All eyes were on gorgeous George at yesterday’s premiere for The Men Who Stare at Goats at Roy Thomson Hall, where six rows of fans lined the entire length of the barricades to catch a glimpse. Security guards threatened that there would be no George if the fans kept pushing.

Coming straight from the press conference, stars George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges caused near riots when they came out of their cars, and the fans were even crazier when Clooney spent a good while signing autographs (fans came prepared with printed photos of him) along the gates, making sure everyone got a good look.

Jeff Bridges on the red carpet for the Men Who Star at Goats after party (Photo by Karon Liu)Last night’s glitziest party was the Vitamin Water event for The Men Who Stare at Goats on the Bridle Path. The celebrities (and goats) were out in full force, and we captured some great shots on the red carpet. View the slide show below.

More from the party on the Bridle Path with Clooney, Bateman and a pack of goats

Jason Batman with his lovely wife, Amanda Anka

One of the most exclusive parties at TIFF was nowhere near downtown. Instead it was in a mansion on the Bridle Path known as The Glass House where the after-party for The Men Who Stare at Goats took place.

Inside, the house was decked in bottles of Vitamin Water (they sponsored the party) while outside, two pens filled with actual goats wearing shirts that read “Don’t stare at me” greeted guests with their blue-cheese odour and menacing jumps (more on that later).

Jeff Bridges was the first to arrive on the red carpet with a handful of reporters like Lainey and Glen Baxter (we assumed most of the no-shows decided Lawrence was too much of a trip from downtown), followed by author Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan, who wrote the screenplay. The celebrity flow then slowed a bit as reporters waited for George Clooney’s arrival (he skipped the carpet and went straight into the house but left about an hour later). Jason Bateman also skipped the red carpet upon arrival but came back out to talk about the joys of fatherhood with his wife, Amanda Anka.

Mena Suvari spent most of the Vitamin Water party playing with goats

mena

If she can rustle up a goat, surely she can do the same for her career

While the men may stare at goats, we were staring at them last night in the Bridle Path glass mansion that beamed Vitamin Water like an alien mother ship. On the inside, a cool and casual George Clooney mixed through the party with ease, but when asked by a fan “Can I take a photo with you?” he suavely responded, “Not a chance buddy.” Mingling in the kitchen were Jason Bateman, Patricia Clarkson and Peter Gallagher. Although earlier in the day Jeff Bridges announced to a room full of media, “I am a dolphin,” after laughing like one, he was not balancing a giant beach ball on his nose or doing happy wiggles in the indoor pool, as typically expected by the species, but rather hanging loose on a couch deep in conversation.

In today’s lineup of galas and special presentations we have Ewan McGregor and Clooney chasing government conspiracies, Natalie Portman playing a stepmom (in non-Julia Roberts fashion) and Demi Moore and David Duchovny at war with their neighbours. Learn about all of these, plus the directorial debut of designer Tom Ford and many other screenings, after the jump.
