Two weeks away from the start of the Toronto International Film Festival, official sponsor Skyy Vodka kicked things off with its annual pre-festival fête, this year at an appropriately swanky Forest Hill home, to reveal their celebrity-themed cocktails. In previous years, the cocktails have honoured Canadians like Ellen Page and Jay Baruchel but, sadly, this time around north-of-the-49th celebs like Sarah Polley and Ryan Gossling didn’t make the drink list. Here are a few drinks to sip on while scoping out the festival scene or drowning your nationalistic sorrow.

Toronto may not be known as Hollywood North—that’s our westerly counterpart, Vancouver—but we’ve got our fair share of movies being shot in the city this summer. One of them is Cosmopolis, an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel of the same name, by local director David Cronenberg. The film stars the best-looking vampire around, Robert Pattinson, who has been spotted on set at King Street East and Victoria Street sporting a suit and tie, with slicked-back hair.

For those of you who weren’t watching the Genie Awards last night, you missed an essential tidbit of CanCon couple news: one of our favourite duos, Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill, are engaged. Needless to say, it’s exciting news, unless you were holding out for Baruchel to make it work with his former Popular Mechanics for Kids co-host, Elisha Cuthbert.

Genie nominations no big surprise, with Barney’s Version and Incendies in the lead

We’ve already watched the Golden Globes. And Oscar nominations were announced last week. But that doesn’t mean we can forget about Canada’s version of the Academy Awards (albeit with less recognizable statues), the Genies. The nominations were announced today, and this year’s Genie picks seem fairly predictable—the widely acclaimed Barney’s Version roped in eleven nominations, including best picture, direction, adapted screen play and best lead and supporting actor nods. Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated Incendies netted an even ten.

Because there’s nothing we love more than canoodling Canucks, we’re thrilled to report a budding romance between Alison Pill and Jay Baruchel. OK, so they’re not quite at the McGosling fame level yet, but you do know them. Pill is the moon-faced young thesp who played the lone lesbian in Milk and currently stars as Princess Maud in Pillars of the Earth. And Baruchel played the really stoned guy who kind of looks like a hamster in Knocked Up. For most of us, TIFF is synonymous with glamorous parties and getting to see major films before the rest of the world, but for many in the industry, it increasingly means big business. According to Variety, Toronto has become the “unofficial marketplace” for the world’s top film execs to sell premium films that debut at Cannes and to launch films they’ll take to the American Film Market (AFM) in November.

With September looming, the annual swarm of boozers and cruisers is about to descend upon our city. No, not incoming U of T students—the Toronto International Film Festival is nigh. The Hazelton Hotel played host to the first of many TIFF events (and our first celeb sighting of the season—Brandon Walsh, oops, Jason Priestley, hanging in the lobby, talking about a visit to the Astral Media studios), with official sponsor Skyy vodka unveiling its annual celebrity-themed cocktails. In years past, such Canucks as Don McKellar, Ellen Page and Lisa Ray have been immortalized in alcohol. Here, the cocktails a lucky few will be sipping on the party circuit.

TIFF co-directors Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey announced this year’s Canadian lineup yesterday to a room of film industry and media types noshing on little plates of poutine at the Royal York. Among the 858 Canadian films submitted for consideration, 72 were selected to screen at the 35th film festival.

We had a Princess Diaries moment this morning when we saw this photo shoot of Jay Baruchel in GQ. Remember that awkward tween next to Elisha Cuthbert on Popular Mechanics for Kids? The one who just asserted his dorky bona fides by becoming the 20-something poster child of the Judd Apatow franchise? There’s no evidence of it here. Baruchel may be delightfully self-effacing and classically eh-list sheepish in interviews (he confessed on The Hour that he still lives minutes away from his mama in Montreal and buys her smokes), but posing in Ray-Bans and $1,800 rain slickers for this slide show, he’s nothing short of—dare we say it?—hot.

From Kingston to New York: a big month for The Trotsky

It’s been a big month for The Trotsky, the indie film written and directed by Montreal’s Jacob Tierney. The movie stars Jay Baruchel (who is also the lead in She’s Out of My League, though we prefer to remember him from those Popular Mechanics for Kids episodes with Elisha Cuthbert) and premiered at last year’s TIFF. It’s one of three Canadian films to make it to the Tribeca Film Festival this year, along with Cairo Time and the documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. It follows a Montreal high school student who believes he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky and is obsessed with recreating the leader’s life, complete with exile and assassination. Typical teenage stuff, really, minus any Jonas Brothers. Coming off its massive People’s Choice win at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival (which enjoyed an increase of 20 per cent in attendance this year) last week, Tierney and co. will surely feel right at home amid the glamour of New York.

The buzz around TIFF awards is running rampant

We are thinking that the Cadillac People’s Choice Award should be renamed Teenager’s Choice this TIFF. High school horrors like Jennifer’s Body and Leslie, My Name is Evil are getting big buzz. There’s also some chat about Whip It, the (say it with us) directorial debut of Drew Barrymore. The Trotsky (starring Jay Baruchel and set in Montreal) is apparently winning over Canadian hearts, making it a front runner for the Best Canadian Feature Award.

Jay Baruchel: Commie hero in film, capitalist burger devourer in life

Should you find yourself in love with the nerd-hero Jay Baruchel, in town for The Trotsky, there are two things to know:

1. You’re not alone…for much longer. His adorkable film, about a Montreal boy who honest-to-Marx believes he’s the reincarnated Leon Trotsky, is the hypest of TIFF’s homegrown fare. Come its release, we predict tween girls from coast-to-coast will develop a new attention span for early 20th century revolutionary history.

2. You can find him at McDonald’s. “Any McDonald’s. It’s all he eats,” swears his Trotsky costar, Emily Hampshire. “He’ll probably be with his mom, too. He’s a big momma’s boy! Seriously, he’ll be at Mickey D’s with her.”

Aww. We’re lovin’ it.
