See, Hear, Read: three local experts tell us what books, movies and music they’re craving this month

They love it. We want it. Three red-hot releases

“At first glance, Sofia Coppola’s latest film seems to be about the excesses of Hollywood, but it’s really more of a father-daughter story. Stephen Dorff plays a pampered star who suddenly has to care for his 11-year-old kid, and Elle Fanning is wonderful in the role of a girl who idolizes her dad despite his many shortcomings. Somewhere moves at a languid pace, but has some great comedic flourishes. Two-lead films are tricky to pull off, and this one is seamless.”

Obama borrows from Stephen Harper playbook, sings Beatles song

As Stephen Harper well knows, singing a little Beatles ditty is political gold. We have to admit we swooned a little when Harper sang “With a Little Help From My Friends” with a little help from Yo-Yo Ma. Well, it seems Harper’s musical magic has rubbed off on Barack Obama, who two nights ago got up onstage at the White House to sing “Hey Jude” with Paul McCartney, Jack White, Jerry Seinfeld and a dozen or so other rich, important people. (See the video after the jump.) We think Harper (who also played piano) outperformed Obama. Disagree? Let us know in the comments.

Why Jack White has no film career in his future

Jack White only looks like a man just waiting to be immortalized by Johnny Depp. In the press conference for Emmett Malloy’s tour documentary, The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights, the vampire-hued rock god emerged as his own image maker. Doing 90 per cent of the talking, White spoke about his directorial ambitions (he just did a video for the band The Dead Weather and would like to do films if they weren’t so darn time consuming) and control-freakish impulses (the color red on the film poster had to be “his” red; the editing seems to have been done by a royal “we”).

The much-anticipated official list of celebrities scheduled to attend TIFF arrived in our in-boxes this morning. We’re happy to report that two of the biggest names rumoured to be heading our way, George Clooney and Oprah, are definitely coming.

A lot of our other favourites have also confirmed: Big Love’s Amanda Seyfried, a reformed David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Drew Barrymore (perhaps we’ll spot her making eyes at locals at Sweaty Betty’s again), two of our three favourite Jennifers (Garner and Connelly; Aniston is a no-show), many Michaels (Caine, Cera, Douglas, Moore), the always lovely Natalie Portman, Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Polley, Tilda Swinton, Tom Ford, Viggo Mortensen and so many more.

See the full list of guests after the jump.

TIFF’s documentary films observe an askew planet (ours)

Official TIFF blogger Thom Powers says the selection of documentaries at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival reveals a “world out of balance,” with movies addressing our changing oceans (Turtle: The Incredible Journey), struggling Iraq war vets (How to Fold a Flag) and even the coming apocalypse (Chris Smith’s Collapse). We can’t seem to remember a time when documentary makers weren’t saying the world is coming to an end. But no matter, there is plenty of levity here, too, including the premiere of Chris Rock’s look at African American beauty in Good Hair. He may be exploring serious questions about race, but we’re sure it will still be funny. More documentary film notes after the jump.
