Former Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun is Toronto’s newest—and most popular—baseball analyst

Here, 10 things the Rogers Sportsnet broadcaster can’t live without

The List: Gregg ZaunThe List: Gregg ZaunMy World Series ring
I got traded to the Florida Marlins in 1996, when it was one of the worst teams in the league. The next year we won the World Series. Some Hall of Famers don’t even have rings, so I feel like it’s almost disrespectful not to wear it. If I’m not in a sweatsuit, this is on my finger.

My brew
I got hooked on Dunkin’ Donuts coffee when I made it to the big leagues. You can’t get it in Toronto, but Donut Shop Coffee by the Coffee People is the next best thing.

The List: Gregg ZaunMy Wahl beard trimmer
I couldn’t grow a beard until I was in my late 20s, and I’ve had one ever since. I hate the way I look without facial hair—I don’t have any lips.

Just Opened: Joey Don Mills

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

At first we were hesitant to write about yet another big box “casual fine dining” establishment with dark wood decor, bleach-blond servers in form-fitting black uniforms and, of course, a menu that strives to be more ethnically diverse than a Benetton ad. But when we heard that the menu at Joey Don Mills was designed by Chris Mills, the 40-year-old chef who once placed fifth in the Bocuse d’Or and competed on the original Iron Chef, we dropped in at the first location, at the Shops at Don Mills, just to see what was up.

Elevated Oprah takes no chances with security (except sometimes)

Destination unknown: elevator numbers were switched off at the Hazelton when Oprah was changing floors (Photo by Karon Liu)

Going up? O, no you’re not.

When Oprah Winfrey rides the elevator, the numbers go black, or so claims a Yorkville insider we met at the InStyle party. The insider told us that although Oprah fans had swarmed the Four Seasons in hopes of catching their 4 p.m. saviour, the Precious producer was, in fact, staying at The Hazelton. We also learned that when Oprah wanted to go up or down the elevator, FBI tactics were in play: all the elevators went dark so no one could know which floor she was on. To further ensure her safeguard, security would block off the foyer to prevent other guests—A-listers or not—from getting to their room.

Was George Clooney dining at Jack Astor’s?

Prego Della Piazza, Sotto Sotto, Giancarlo Trattoria…Mamma Mia! Where does George Clooney eat his pasta? Apparently, Jack Astor’s at Yonge and Dundas, so we gave them a call to clarify:

“THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING JACK ASTOR’S, HOW MAY I HELP YOU?”
“Did George Clooney eat pasta at your restaurant last night?”
”Yes, I got to work this morning and everyone was talking about it.”
”Does he like a sprinkle of parmesan?”
“Call me back in 20 minutes. I’ll talk to one of the managers who was here last night.”

Camels as burgers, Jack Astor’s glory, McDonald’s goes green

• Baby camel burgers will join the ranks of Japanese whale sandwiches on a list of exotic food that drives PETA members nuts. Customers of Hashi Meals (“hashi” means baby camel) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, say the burgers have a delicate taste, and experts say they’re low in fat. [Reuters]

• Sales at such mid-range casual chains as Jack Astor’s and Alice Fazooli’s are up seven per cent year over year, while high-end restaurants continue to struggle through the recession. We feel it’s our duty to remind Torontonians that a steak at Jack’s is $25.98, but the Summerlicious prix fixe at Batifole is just $25—and Lady Gaga won’t be blasting in the background.
