Carlos Hernandez shutters Inigo, the churrasqueira in Igor Kenk’s infamous bike shop

After just under a year in business, it seems that Inigo, the churrasqueira at the foot of Trinity Bellwoods Park, has shut its doors. Owner and chef Carlos Hernandez told Now’s Steven Davey that problems with his landlord were partly to blame, as were difficulties sourcing quality free-range chicken. Being across from the park didn’t help in the way of foot traffic either, apparently. And sadly, it doesn’t look like Hernandez will be opening another restaurant any time soon. Read the entire article [Now] »

Introducing: Inigo, a Queen West churrasqueira, takes over Igor Kenk’s old space

While Dundas West is in the midst of a carnivorous craze with a serious emphasis on the pig (we’re looking at you, Porchetta and Co.), a new Queen West takeout spot at the southern end of Trinity-Bellwoods Park is putting its faith in the original white meat: chicken. Carlos Hernandez opened up shop at Inigo last week—in Igor Kenk’s old spot— where he’s offering his take on the Portuguese churrasqueira, those homey greasy spoons ubiquitous on College and Dundas West.

Torito’s former chef sets up roast chicken restaurant in Igor Kenk’s old bike shack

One has to wonder how Igor Kenk would feel knowing his old Queen West cycle clinic is about to be replaced by something even greasier than a bike chain. By late August or early September, the once-unmissable storefront across from Trinity Bellwoods will be converted to a takeout chicken joint owned and operated by Carlos Hernandez, the chef who recently left Kensington tapas joint Torito.

The new restaurant, with 10 or 15 seats, is being modelled on a Portuguese churrasqueira. Hernandez says he will offer such “wholesome food” as salads, brown rice, soups and stews alongside oven-roasted, free-range chicken. “I’m catering to the neighbourhood, the young couples around there.”
