Good Stuff Cheap: Toronto’s five best vintage stores (no rummaging required)

For Luxury Labels
Venture a few blocks north of Yorkville to Haute Classics for immaculate second-hand pieces sourced from very tony closets. Chanel, Chloé, Dior and Christian Louboutin (patent sapphire pumps for $270 instead of $700-plus) are priced in the hundreds, rather than the thousands.
946 Yonge St., 416-922-7900.

For Menswear
Parkdale’s House of Vintage has outstanding men’s garb—a rarity on the old-is-new circuit. Dudes can put together a Michael Caine Alfie look with ankle boots ($60) and a Pierre Cardin blazer ($50).
1239 Queen St. W., 416-535-2142.

The Bay vs. Holts: the Bay’s scheme to steal the fashion crown from Holts

The sensible shoes and twin–sets are gone, replaced by stilettos and crystal-encrusted gowns. There’s valet parking and personal shoppers, and they’re serving champagne up on three. It’s all part of the Bay’s scheme to win the loyalty of society shopaholics—and steal the fashion crown from Holts

One evening last March, Toronto’s stylish set put on their best frocks and headed to a retail baptism. Sarah Jessica Parker, celebrity high priestess of fashion, was in town to launch the Halston Heritage label at The Bay. The party, which reportedly cost over $200,000, was meant to establish Canada’s oldest department store as a major player in high-end womenswear. If retailers can be born again, this was The Bay’s moment to lean back and dip its head into the holy water.

Fashion media and socialites were ushered into the Queen Street flagship store and up the escalator to sip champagne on the third floor. That’s where The Room is located. The upscale designer dress salon was renovated a year ago for approximately $4.4 million in a high modernist style by the designers Yabu Pushelberg. The result is a treasure trove of conversation piece baubles, heels, flirty cocktail dresses and gowns by some of the most prestigious designers in the business. It’s the beating heart of the new Bay.

Collagen for feet, short-lived trends of the 2000s, Audrey Hepburn’s clothes sell for $437,800

• A collection of Audrey Hepburn’s couture dresses and accessories was auctioned off in London, generating more than £270,000 (about $437,800). The centrepiece, a Chantilly lace cocktail gown, was estimated at £20,000, but sold for an astonishing £60,000. The pieces are all lust-worthy but are perhaps better suited to a mannequin than a real person. In order to fit into the outfits, the wearer must match Hepburn’s diminutive 32-22-34 frame. [Daily Mail]

• We usually associate opera stars with barrel-chested men and Rubenesque women. But Miuccia Prada, who is designing costumes for the Metropolitan Opera’s spring production of Attila, disagrees. Apparently, Prada took one look at the supernumeraries (non-singing actors and extras) and said, “I cannot clothe them! I need models!” The Met is now conducting model castings, despite those who insist supernumerary work is about how you move, not how you look. Unfortunately, good models are experts at both. [Paper]

cardholderWhen we found this flashy Hermès-inspired business card holder by Glamnoir, we knew it would be a more professional way of storing our cards than in a scattered mess at the bottom of our purse. And with all the hobnobbing we plan to do during TIFF, a cheap solution is just what we needed. Conveniently, the holders are found at RedLetter in Yorkville, which starting September 10 will be the centre of film festival hubbub. Designer Nada Shepherd wants to take moms out of jogging pants and get them in tight jeans

At LG Fashion Week in March, insiders went mad for Nada, the eponymous womenswear line from Nada Shepherd. In a week where the passable is hailed as brilliant, Shepherd’s collection—its vision cohesive, the details clever—deserved the hype. It wasn’t her first runway foray (she’s been designing since 2004), but it was a breakthrough, snagging the attention of major stateside retailer Lord & Taylor. Her upcoming fall line is luxe and leather-filled, mixing a sharp-shouldered, lean-legged silhouette with feminine ruffles and quilted textures. Shepherd embodies such contrasts: she’s a polished, Hermès-belted uptown girl who listens to alt-rock in her Fashion District studio and pines for a tattoo. Here, the designer dishes about her major dos (earrings) and don’ts (jogging pants), and where she shops for standout accessories.
