Before Harvey Weinstein’s crazy shindig sent Grey Goose Soho House guests into full-on serious party mode, the Coriolanus after-party warmed the place up, with stars Ralph Fiennes (the director), Gerard Butler and Brian Cox all in attendance. Butler seemed grateful for the reception, mingling and high-fiving guests. He, like Susie Essman before him, dropped many F-bombs in his deep Scottish brogue, telling us his character in Machine Gun Preacher “is so fucking serious—I’m more bubbly” before muttering that he “fucking love[s] Toronto.” When we ran into him in the bathroom, he admitted he “wasn’t even sure which party he was there for until minutes before”—thank God for handlers and wranglers who keep celebs in the loop.

50 Reasons to Love Toronto: No.30, There’s a hidden watering hole called Goodnight in an alley at Richmond and Spadina

(Image: Lisa Gent)
The first rule of Goodnight is: don’t talk about Goodnight. The hidden watering hole, located behind a buzzer-access metal door at the end of a dark, graffiti-covered alley at Richmond and Spadina, opened last September, just in time to be Harvey Weinstein’s unofficial TIFF clubhouse. To a certain nightlife species—people who experience a frisson entering a bar with a strict reservations-only policy—Goodnight is proof that Toronto has arrived. The list of regulars includes erstwhile politicas like Belinda Stronach (who often stops in with her boyfriend, Harbord Room chef Corey Vitiello), indie darlings like Metric’s Emily Haines, and professional partiers like Ashleigh Dempster, the co-founder of social climbers’ club The Society (she’s also married to Matt George, one of Goodnight’s owners). Once you get past the door, it’s remarkably cool. Imagine a pub designed by Wallpaper magazine: the raw wood bar is supported by metal radiators; a wooden staircase leads nowhere; vintage posters of Communist leaders and sewing patterns line the walls. And a list of potent concoctions like the Fat Sailor (three types of rum and Tia Maria) and the Bunny Hug (equal parts Canadian Club, gin and absinthe) puts even the most aloof A-lister in a frisky, feel-good mood.
Spotted! Woody Harrelson, Ryan Phillippe, Harvey Weinstein and Bruce Springsteen
In the pre-TIFF weeks, everyone (ourselves included) wondered whether the new Bell Lightbox Theatre and a few shiny King Street hot spots would result in a mass uptown exodus. But now that the fest is in full swing, it’s obvious we underestimated the familiarity factor. Apparently there really is no place like Yorkville, or at least that’s what we’re left to conclude after spotting an arsenal of A-listers at the dustiest of de rigueur dwellings, the Four Seasons. Here, a rundown of the evening’s encounters.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Colin Firth’s 50th Birthday at Soho House Club
The Toronto International Film Festival happened to coincide with the birthday of one of its most frequent guests: Colin Firth. He celebrated the milestone in the stylish digs provided by Soho House Club with Michael Ondaatje, Geoffrey Rush and a few other A-listers.
Here, a peek inside the dashing Mr. Darcy’s Firth’s birthday bash.

Dignity helps when trying to party with Nicolas Cage, Fergie and Keanu at the InStyle bash

British actor Bill Nighy is mobbed by fans with poor taste in hats outside the Windsor Arms last night (Photo by Jen McNeely)
“We want the king, we want the king!”
At first we couldn’t decipher what the overzealous crowd was chanting, but as we drew closer to the masses outside the Windsor Arms, it became clear that it was not the king they wanted but the Cage. Nicolas, that is. The mob was gaining momentum and force, so when British actor Bill Nighy exited the hotel, an emergency PR situation dominoed: fans surged forward, magazines slapped magazines at Nighy and women on walkie-talkies were frantically trying to locate his driver. Cops had to buffer the mania so Nighy could escape. As he wandered in the direction of Theatre Books, all we could hear him say was “Where the fuck? What the fuck? Fuck!” An intense female wrangler yelled, “Bill—back inside!” She shouted louder, “Bill! Inside, let’s go!” ushering him in haste back in the embrace of the Windsor Arms. By the urgency in her tone, we thought the fans were about ready to rip his flesh off, like a scene from Shaun of the Dead.
The Wrestler after party: Marilyn falls, Weinstein bustles, Aniston disappoints

The Park Hyatt rooftop was crammed on Sunday night for The Wrestler after party. Again, barrelling through the scene was broad-shouldered Harvey Weinstein. Hey, Harv: just because it’s The Wrestler doesn’t mean you have to be so aggressive! Bad boy Sean Penn accompanied his wife, Robin Wright Penn. They were joined by No Country for Old Men’s Josh Brolin and Jennifer Aniston, whose reviews in Management are just so-so. Looks like over-sensitive and bubbly Rachel was your calling, honey, ’cause we haven’t been impressed with anything since your fab mid-’90s haircut. Although Evan Rachel Wood, who will forever be 13 in our mind, was loitering in the lobby, we did not see her when boyfriend (and, yes, that still makes us choke) Marilyn Manson was falling against, and sliding down, a wall. He’s just too skinny. Maybe if he hadn’t removed his rib cage he might be able to sustain a night of heavy drinking like The Wrestler star Mickey Rourke. That said, perhaps not—Rourke did get mighty sauced at TIFF ’02 at the Bovine Sex Club, where, following some naughty lap dances, he reportedly dropped his pants. When is someone going to make a film about celebrities behaving badly at a festival, Mr. Weinstein? That’s your cue.—Jen McNeely

Paris Hilton titillates the surging masses at Ultra Supper Club

At 11 o’clock last night, the swarm of paparazzi was thick all the way down Ultra Supper Club’s black carpet as dozens of folks waited for one Paris Hilton. The rain was falling and the swarm of media hacks was ready with giant umbrellas to scooch under to protect their cameras. We were among them. This was not a moment to be missed; we just had to deal with the man pressed up against us, the bulge in his pants locked to our behind. But not this, nor the rain, nor the choking clouds of cologne was going to keep us from leaning in to get an utterance from the world’s most famous young blonde. Prior to her arrival, we overheard every line imaginable being spat at the bouncers, as desperate Paris look-alikes clamoured to see their idol. Suddenly, we had overwhelming sympathy for every doorman in town. After the jump, the arrival of Paris and why fame is so easy for her.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno after-party finds us dancing near Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Smith, Adrien Brody and Edward Norton

Zack and Miri Make a Porno was up against a lot of roadblocks due to, ahem, stiff MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) rating regulations. Now that it’s done, the comedy isn’t having any difficulty getting roaring laughter from TIFF audiences who relish dirty humour. Awkward as it might sound to be filmed naked bending over a coffee shop counter getting pillaged from behind with dark roast beans dropping from the sky, director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) put together a stellar cast. Naughty quotes and juicy tidbits after the jump.

Five things every starlet will be wearing at TIFF
We caught up with celebrity stylist Sandra Graham before the film fest madness to find out how to dress like a celeb this September. Lo, Reese, Beyoncé and Gwyneth (to name a few) get on best-dressed lists. Here are five looks every stylish actress will be sporting at TIFF.
