Dan Levy: hot or not?

The evidence (Image: George Pimentel)

Remember that episode of Seinfeld when Jerry dated the woman who looked gorgeous one minute and ghastly the next? Well that’s what came to mind this morning when we stumbled on photos of Dan Levy from last week’s Lainey Gossip Smut Soiree held by The Society. Actually, the first thing that came to mind was “Damn, Dan Levy looks hot,” followed swiftly by, “Wait a sec, is Dan Levy hot?”

Chatelaine magazine redesign results in murder

The redesigned June issue

Metaphorical murder, duh. One of the most shocking changes of the newly redesigned Chatelaine (other than the semi-controversial lack of features) is the death of Robin, the Markham woman found through market research who served as the model reader. In our 2008 piece on the tumult at the monthly, then-acting-editor-in-chief Lise Ravary showed writer David Hayes a sheet of bristol board covered in photos Robin had provided: snapshots of her children, a handbag, Bono, CDs, paraphernalia covering a fridge, an SUV with a trailer, and the inside of both a closet and a medicine cabinet.

Derek Blasberg comes to Toronto, stirs the pot (not that pot)

Blasberg signs copies at The Room (Image: George Pimentel)

Derek Blasberg is to New York what Shinan Govani is to Toronto: the city’s gossip king. So on his recent book promo trip to Toronto (he recently released Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady), the city’s socialite set and PR mavens gave him an upper-classy tour of the city with parties at The Room and LAB. In his regular blog for Vogue, Blasberg shared what he learned about the city, including that Toronto is shockingly close to New York—“Canada ain’t that far away—from my apartment in New York to my hotel room, door-to-door service was two hours.” And, Toronto likes acronyms. Thank you, LAB—a.k.a. Live and Breathe. But Blasberg may have inadvertently stuck his nose down some inhospitable holes when he wrote that The Bay is “Toronto’s most famous shopping mecca.” (We can think of another mecca that might have something to say about that.) And that Suzanne Rogers, who hosted a party for the writer, is the “queen of Toronto’s fashion scene.” (Cough, cough. Stacey Kimel. Cough.)

For reader bonus points: Find the other gossip king in the photo on Blasberg’s blog post.

Mayor May Not

Non-existent poll gives Rob Ford fictional lead over Smitherman

Last week, city hall was positively atwitter about a yet-to-be-released poll that would declare not George Smitherman but Rob Ford to be in the top spot. The most prominent rumour-mongering happened during the council’s debate over reprimanding Ford for his breach of council ethics. Adam Vaughan lamented, “There’s a poll coming out that says he’s in first place (in the race),” before comparing Ford to Sarah Palin and voting to reprimand him. Gossipers were saying that the poll was due out that weekend, according to the Star. And then speculation shifted to Wednesday.

The weekend has come and gone. Wednesday has come and gone. And we’re sitting here like Caesar after the Ides has passed, wondering when the knives come out.

Mayor May Not

The best of Rebel Mayor: the funniest quips from city hall’s mystery tweeter, who was unmasked (sort of) this week

The Rebel Mayor situation, the municipal election’s only fun gossip story so far, may have ended before it was spoken of outside of city hall. For the uninitiated, an anonymous tweeter known as Rebel Mayor has been poking fun at just about every public figure in Toronto since November 2009, with a particular emphasis on mayoral candidates. The identity of the musket-wielding, Scotch-swilling, Prius-driving, old English–spouting reincarnation of William Lyon Mackenzie (who chronicles the travails of his “team” as he campaigns to reclaim his place as Toronto’s mayor) has been the subject of much speculation, but it may have been inadvertently revealed earlier this week.

Toronto Web sites make $20-million offer to buy Perezhilton.com

Perez (Image: Ann Larie Valentine)

All of Perez Hilton’s hard work drawing coke trails and the word “whore” on celebrity pap shots has finally paid off. Maybe. Locally based gossip site Zacktaylor.ca and Avid Life Media, the Toronto media giant that owns Hotornot.com, Ashley Madison and Cougarlife.com, have joined with Thedirty.com to make a bid for Perezhilton.com. The offer of $20 million would see $18 million paid up front and another $2 million held in escrow for a year.

“We’d want Perez to take this money and walk,” Taylor told the National Post. “He has his brand, which is great, and his traffic, which is even better, but we’re looking to create something totally new.”

Tease those TIFF taste buds with a Shinan Govani Q&A

Shinan Govani at the launch party for his book, Boldface Names (Photo by Jen McNeely)

Local gossip king Shinan Govani landed the cover of the premiere issue of In Toronto magazine this week (it’s like Xtra or Fab for the Yorkville crowd), and while we already know too much about the party pundit, the story revealed some tidbits that might be useful for amateur celebrity spotters. The highlights of the 1,400-word Q&A:

Govani’s picks for celebrity sightings:
Drew Barrymore was spotted at Sweaty Betty’s twice when she was in town for TIFF, Robin Williams once visited the Dora Keogh, Daniel Craig and Megan Fox have dined at Avenue Road’s L’Unità, and Toufik Sarwa’s Cinq 01 on College is the go-to place for local celebs.

His answer to the tired “will Toronto ever be like New York” question:
Up the population by one million. “Toronto is plenty engaging and glam—what we’re still lacking is scale,” he tells the magazine, adding that a Toronto party may have 10 “cool” people, but a New York or London party may have 100 “cool” people.

Today in Bieber news: more German gaffes, death threats and hair trends

This week, Justin Bieber taught us how to count in German, made his fans threaten to kill another celebrity and inspired boys to wear their bangs down to there. As we previously reported, the Biebs went on a New Zealand talk show and said he didn’t know what “German” means (even after seeing the word in print). The YouTube clip has become one of this week’s viral hits, with more than half a million views.

Bieber, who tweets more than he talks, took to Twitter yesterday to explain that he thought the interviewer said “Jewman” and linked to a video in which he counts to 10 in German. He also wrote:

Fucked Up and Stars get friendly on Twitter

In true Canadian fashion, indie bands Fucked Up and Stars turned a potential Twitter war into a love-in. While earlier this week American celebrities were exchanging some drama-worthy tweets (Billy Corgan accused Courtney Love of abandoning her daughter: “Only u could abandon such a beautiful, incredible child who is smarter than u, cooler than u, and better than u”), Fucked Up and Stars turned all schmaltzy after Twitter tensions rose on Tuesday.

Rita Silvan, Elle Canada’s editor-in-chief, steps down

Rumours swirled on Twitter yesterday about Rita Silvan, editor-in-chief of Elle Canada, stepping down from her position, but no one at the magazine’s parent company would confirm or deny it. The gossip screeched to a halt a half-hour ago, when the e-mail below was sent out to Transcontinental staffers by the senior VP of consumer magazines, Francine Tremblay:

I regret to inform you of the departure of Rita Silvan, Editor in Chief, Elle Canada.  I wish to thank Rita for her contributions to the Elle brand over the past years and wish her luck in her future endeavors.

Let the TIFF gossip begin: Julian Schnabel picks Toronto over Cannes for Miral premiere

The deliciously creepy Dafoe at TIFF last year (Image: Lindt Red Carpet Moments)

We have our first TIFF post of the year as filmmaker Julian Schnabel told film site Hollywood Elsewhere that he’ll be debuting his historical drama Miral at the Venice and Toronto film festivals this year, rather than Cannes. Hey, Toronto may not be the fashion capital of the world, but the international film industry appreciates Hogtown.

Miral (about a Palestinian woman who opens an orphanage in Jerusalem following the creation of Israel) stars Freida Pinto (who already had major TIFF love with Slumdog Millionaire, which won the people’s choice award in 2008) and TIFF regular Willem Dafoe. Pinto is pretty much guaranteed to show up, since she plays the title character, and there’s also a good chance Dafoe will walk the red carpet, since he’s the only other big name attached to the film.

Blacklisted from the States, Oprah biographer heads to Toronto for book tour

(Image: Karon Liu)

After being denied media coverage from David Letterman, Larry King and Barbara Walters, author Kitty Kelley is promoting her unauthorized Oprah biography in Toronto, where news outlets are apparently out of Oprah’s firing range or desperate for any celebrity gossip that doesn’t involve Avril Lavigne’s relationship with that guy from The Hills.

In an interview with the Star, Kelley, who has previously come under fire for her biographies of Frank Sinatra and Nancy Reagan, says even her publisher, Random House, was nervous about bad-mouthing Oprah. Still, Kelley has had no problems arranging interviews in Toronto.

Casting the Rahim Jaffer made-for-TV movie

Remember watching that CTV flick about SARS? Or that Toronto-filmed biopic about Celine Dion? Neither do we, so we figured this whole Rahim Jaffer affair could make for a far more memorable miniseries or made-for-TV movie. To help kick-start the making of this still-imaginary project, we’ve come up with a few casting suggestions.

Toronto cop coming out with his own version of Bold Face Names

Clearly the Toronto Police Service has never heard of the Streisand Effect. Constable Brent Pilkey is going ahead with releasing Lethal Rage, a fictionalized account of his 15 years serving in Toronto’s 51 Division after the TPS’s human resources department dropped claims that the book is a conflict of interest and that Pilkey could be charged under the Police Services Act. The novel, the first of three in a series and scheduled to be released May 1 by ECW Press, centres around Jack Warren, a rookie cop transferred to 51 Division (the downtown zone that stretches from the lakeshore to Bloor and from Yonge to the DVP), where he has to face conflict within the ranks and high crime rates.
