GALLERY: Our 10 picks from this year’s—somewhat kitschy—Toronto Christmas Market

Handmade toys from Blythe for the tots on your list (Image: Caroline Aksich)

The folks behind the second annual Toronto Christmas Market are trying to bring a touch of Old World European Christmas magic to a presently dreary—and snow-free—Toronto. With a 45-foot Christmas tree decked out with close to 20,000 lights, a charming carousel and a Ferris wheel that looks over the twinkling Distillery District, there’s enough to keep the kids occupied while you get some shopping out of the way. The Christmas Market is open daily until December 18 (weekdays from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., weekends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.). We perused the 35 vendors’ wares to cull the treasures from the knick-knacks. See what made the cut after the jump.

The Revue screens Kings of Pastry doc as part of foodie film series

Attention pastry nerds: you might want to consider cancelling your evening plans, because tonight The Revue on Roncesvalles is showing Kings of Pastry, D. A. Pennebaker’s documentary about Chicago-based pastry chef Jacquy Pfeiffer and the gruelling Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) competition as part of its food-themed series, The Epicure’s Revue. Every four years, 16 of the world’s finest pastry chefs meet in Lyon to duel it out over three intensive days for the right to wear the coveted red-, white- and blue-striped collar, one of the highest honours in French cooking. Chefs work around the clock, perfecting dozens of unique creations before a verdict is handed down by a group of master judges, themselves all MOFs. Think Ace of Cakes meets Top Chef, but a lot more complicated and with a wicked French accent. After the show, some restaurants and food shops from the area will be offering film-appropriate dishes, including Barque’s popular pecan pie, The Local’s Irish truffle and The Chocolateria’s Nanaimo bars and house-made ice cream.

With Sausage Partners, Kyle Deming plans to contribute yet another chef-run fine food shop to the Leslieville strip

The Sausage Partners: Lorraine, Lilly and Kyle Deming (Image: Signe Langford)

First there was the Leslieville Cheese Market, then the Foodist Market, then Hooked, and now Sausage Partners. Leslieville is rapidly becoming the east end’s go-to ’hood for gourmet food shopping, and with many of these places being run by pro chefs, it’s easy to see why. This new meat shop will open in June in the former Inspired Cook space, with Kyle Deming (head chef at Starfish and Ceili Cottage) and his wife Lorraine at the helm. “We’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time,” explains Lorraine, “but we really got the push about two years ago when we made sausages for Patrick [McMurray]’s 40th birthday. Everyone was asking, ‘Where can we buy these?’ So we just kept thinking about it and it feels like the right time now.”

Lakeview Restaurant is going retail with a new Dundas West store

For Fadi Hakim, co-owner of the Lakeview Restaurant at Dundas and Ossington, having a joint retail space and eatery is a restaurateur’s dream. He had that arrangement with Queen Street’s erstwhile Citron, and now the fantasy is about to come true on Dundas West. He and his co-owners have purchased the adjacent convenience store, in which they’re installing Lakeview Storehouse and Catering, a grocery–convenience store hybrid set to open by the first week of December.

A first look inside Paul Boehmer’s eponymous Ossington restaurant (and details of his new Dean and Deluca-esque retail shop)

Paul Boehmer’s soon-to-open restaurant is like the cherry on top of the Ossington sundae. The eponymous eatery was one of the last to obtain a restaurant and bar permit before the city imposed a one-year moratorium on new establishments last May. “People around the neighbourhood thought that I was opening a nightclub, but since I told them it wasn’t the case, I haven’t received any complaints,” says the former Stadtländer apprentice, who has also cooked at Rosewater Supper Club, Six Steps and Scaramouche. He expects Boehmer to open in less than a month—about six months later than originally planned.

The New Yorker’s recent profile of John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods, makes one thing pretty clear: American Apparel and Dunder Mifflin have a new rival for the title of World’s Kookiest Boss. The massive article shines some light on the enigmatic businessman, and we took particular interest, as rumours are still circulating about a third GTA location of Whole Foods.
