The annual list of celeb-inspired TIFF cocktails is out (with nary a Canadian to be seen)

The Skyy Wilde Ginger, Skyy Lively Temptress and Skyy Feelin’ Fiennes

Two weeks away from the start of the Toronto International Film Festival, official sponsor Skyy Vodka kicked things off with its annual pre-festival fête, this year at an appropriately swanky Forest Hill home, to reveal their celebrity-themed cocktails. In previous years, the cocktails have honoured Canadians like Ellen Page and Jay Baruchel but, sadly, this time around north-of-the-49th celebs like Sarah Polley and Ryan Gossling didn’t make the drink list. Here are a few drinks to sip on while scoping out the festival scene or drowning your nationalistic sorrow.

Ellen Page lies down, makes headlines anyway

Ellen Page lying down about town

Wondering what Ellen Page has been up to since Inception? Judging from a series of recent photos, mostly lying face down in the street. It seems the Halifax-born indie star is the latest fan of the Lying Down Game, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Started by a couple of quirky British dudes, the game has participants simply lie face-down in a weird place, take a photo of themselves, and then post it to the official Lying Down Game Web site, or to the Facebook group.

Coming soon to a theatre near you: 13 films that got distribution deals during TIFF

Nicole Kidman and Paul Giamatti each have a film that got picked up at TIFF (Images: Karon Liu, Stefania Yarhi)

More than ever, TIFF is an event to which filmmakers come to get North American distribution for their films (and not just a chance to get sloshed and walk across a giant rug). After eight days of wheeling and dealing, the following 13 films have been picked up for release.

The swag series: celebs like Rachel Weisz get all the jewellery they want at Lia Sophia

What it is: Lia Sophia, an international company focusing on jewellery, has set up camp in the Windsor Arms’ Prime Restaurant. Offering stars and lucky media gals who visit statement pieces from its latest collection, Lia Sophia will also be sending gift baskets directly to hotel rooms. We wonder if any stars holed up in the Windsor Arms deemed the restaurant too far to travel.

Who goes: Rachel Weisz and Flare editor Lisa Tant.

What they get: Anything they want and as much as they want from the collection. The chunky, bejewelled, silvery Estate bracelet and earrings have been popular choices.

Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter and 11 other chick flicks that dudes like

Bryce Dallas Howard and Matt Damon in Hereafter

Yesterday, TIFF announced that Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter would have its world premiere at this year’s film festival. The movie, in which death brings together the lives of three characters, stars Matt Damon (a troubled psychic who can talk to the dead), Bryce Dallas Howard (his girlfriend, but also Twilight’s new Victoria) and Cécile De France (a French journalist) in a narrative that Eastwood describes as a “chick flick, but one men will like, too.” Not sure what constitutes a chick flick that dudes like? Whip It good: Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page at Tattoo Rock Parlour

Rock ’n’ roller derby: performers prepare for the Whip It after-party (Photo by Jen McNeely)

Roller derby chicks whirled around a TTC streetcar outside Tattoo Rock Parlour on Queen West on Sunday, giving the red carpet crowd a terrific tease for the arrival of director Drew Barrymore and homegrown sweetheart Ellen Page to the Whip It after-party. Blaring classic rock tunes and serving up mac and cheese, this was a Hollywood party with a dirty, down-home feel. We stood in line to get a Whip It tattoo branded on our arm and chatted up some of the real-deal derby girls before sneaking into the VIP section to hang with—well, adjacent to—Drew, Ellen, Jason Reitman and Justin Long.

Drew Barrymore ditches her Whip It after-party for Sweaty Betty’s

drew

Drew Barrymore behind the bar at Sweaty Betty's

Still a wild child, Drew Barrymore ditched her own party for Whip It (see the red carpet photos here) at Tattoo Rock Parlour for Ossington’s Sweaty Betty’s. We knew that she had been before so pre-TIFF, we chatted with owner Pol-Cristo Williams. “If Drew came back, I wouldn’t be surprised,” he told us. “She had a great time.” It was this quote we remembered when we watched Barrymore, Ellen Page and Justin Long shuffle down the graffiti back alley of Tattoo and pile in an SUV. With no verification, we decided to chance it.
