McNally Robinson back from bankruptcy protection, still hates Shops at Don Mills

Winnipeg-based independent bookseller McNally Robinson emerged from bankruptcy protection on Monday with plans to restructure the company.

This comes a month after the company was forced to shut down one of its Winnipeg locations and the Toronto Shops at Don Mills store. Founder Paul McNally has been vocal about the Toronto shop being one of the company’s biggest mistakes and blamed the shopping centre for an array of problems.

Thirty-four Toronto stores that didn’t make it through 2009

A huge rent increase forced Pages to close last summer (Photo by Neal Jennings)

Last year was for Toronto store owners what recent seasons have been like for the Blue Jays: difficult to endure and full of loss. Thanks to the most severe economic downturn in decades, the city said goodbye to many long-standing businesses, notably Dack’s, Syd Silver and Rotman’s Hat Shop and Haberdashery. There was a high turnover of businesses on Queen Street West and at Yonge and Eglinton, and the independent bookstore sector was hit hard. Here, a look back at 34 shops we lost in 2009.

McEwan to open new Italian restaurant, still eyeing the downtown Travelodge for new supermarket location

The hugely successful McEwan supermarket at Shops at Don Mills is keeping Mark McEwan north of Bloor as he plans to open his fourth restaurant next May. Fabbrica, the Italian term for “fabricate,” will be what McEwan calls “a true to form, Grandma’s cooking, down on your knees” Italian restaurant serving roasted fish, Neapolitan pizza (made in wood-burning ovens) and pasta that’s made in-house. “We’ll also have a salami cellar,” McEwan says. “We’re not reinventing the wheel here, we’re just making good food.” The reason to stay uptown, he adds, is that “there’s a huge market up here, and I believe the market is under-serviced. There’s a calling for quality restaurants,” noting the abundance of chain restaurants in the area.

Just Opened: Joey Don Mills

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

At first we were hesitant to write about yet another big box “casual fine dining” establishment with dark wood decor, bleach-blond servers in form-fitting black uniforms and, of course, a menu that strives to be more ethnically diverse than a Benetton ad. But when we heard that the menu at Joey Don Mills was designed by Chris Mills, the 40-year-old chef who once placed fifth in the Bocuse d’Or and competed on the original Iron Chef, we dropped in at the first location, at the Shops at Don Mills, just to see what was up.

Mark McEwan’s opens his grocery store this week (no, seriously)—and plans a second downtown location

Northern star: Mark McEwan will open his gourmet mega-store at The Shops at Don Mills this Thursday

Northern star: Mark McEwan will open his gourmet mega-store at The Shops at Don Mills this Thursday

After months of anticipation, Shops at Don Mills will finally get its gourmet grocer this Thursday, says Mark McEwan. We caught up with The Food Network star over the weekend as he was assembling seared tuna at Toronto Taste 2009 under the gaze of a camera crew. McEwan was supposed to open this Wednesday but computer problems lead to a 24-hour delay. Of course, the store was originally slated to open last January, so what’s one more day?

We’ve been hearing about McEwan—Mark McEwan’s proposed gourmet grocery store—for what seems like eons now. News about it broke in late 2007, with an opening date set for January 2009. But then we were told we’d have to wait another five months. Now, even though controversy is brewing over the store’s gentrifying effects, we are told that the suspense is almost over. Come June, the Bymark chef will open the doors to his supermarket at Lawrence and Don Mills. He envisions the size of his store as somewhere between Pusateri’s and Whole Foods, with aisles of gourmet ingredients and prepared foods tended by employees offering restaurant-style service.
