Cooking classes: the gift that gives back to the gifter

Unsurprisingly, cooking class registration increases in the weeks after Christmas, as wannabe chefs redeem gifts of culinary education. Those shopping around for just the right present will find options for any taste and talent level, with seminars on everything from making chocolate to tasting cheese or learning how to fry an Indian dosa. For romance, try a couples class; for kitchen newbies, there are beginner chef series. Below, our list of nine Toronto teaching kitchens and the gift-worthy classes they offer this December.

Hunky Take Home Chef host Curtis Stone heated up the kitchen at Dish Cooking Studio earlier this week with a demo of a few recipes from his fourth cookbook, Relaxed Cooking With Curtis Stone: Recipes to Put You in My Favourite Mood. Despite the suggestive title, the book is an homage to his beloved grandmother, with whom he first cooked as a kid, and is all about approaching the kitchen with nonchalance. The surf-ready Aussie (frosted-tip faux hawk and all) cooked up a four-course storm with his own line of swanky kitchen gadgets. True to his book’s promise, Stone set the tone for a casual encounter: “I’m going to have a nice, relaxed dinner party with you,” said the laid-back lad. “It means I don’t have to feel bad walking around with a glass of wine in my hand.”

The Dish on Dish

After more than nine years of dishing it out to the city’s well-heeled foodies, Toronto’s queen of entertaining is throwing in the towel—or, rather, passing it on. Trish Magwood, founder and owner of midtown’s Dish Cooking Studio (the catering company/cooking school/café/kitchen store), has sold her business. A new owner took over June 1.
