Local media go a little crazy over the return of the Green Room, for some reason

When the Green Room closed down last year after a series of health violations, it was an open question as to when, or even whether, the Annex dive-slash-legend would open again. Well, brace yourselves, Toronto: the old student hangout has reopened, and the city’s new media crowd is all over it. Apparently, the story was broken by a drunken post on Reddit, but OpenFile, BlogTO and Torontoist were on the story by Sunday afternoon. The news exploded on Twitter on Sunday afternoon, because, well, nobody seemed to know what was going on, and excited speculation is pretty much what Twitter is made for.

The meat-free Yorkshire pudding, Toronto’s gut-warming cocktails, Bonnie Stern’s favourite apps

• Going meatless at certain times of the year, like Christmas, might mean passing on foods like Yorkshire pudding cooked in beef drippings. But the New York Times’ Mark Bittman proposes a seamless stand-in: the popover, which turns a crêpe-like batter baked in a butter-lined cup into Yorkshire-like quick breads. Apparently, they are “at once soft and custard-like on the inside, golden brown and crisp on the outside.” [New York Times]

America’s best coffee, unilingual DineSafe rules, World Pasta Day

• In its November issue, GQ travels the States to pick America’s best coffee shops. Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco scores high marks for its siphon coffee (it should—the machine costs $20,000), along with famed L.A. and Chicago coffee house Intelligentsia. Bizarrely, the article ends by negating everything it has already stated, telling readers to simply “shut up and drink it.” [GQ]

• In the wake of the Ruby Restaurant closure, BlogTO questions why the guidelines for the city of Toronto’s DineSafe program are offered only in English. The garbage disposal calendar comes in various languages, as does the city’s official newsletter. Even the TTC offers 70 languages on its switchboard. What gives, DineSafe? [BlogTO]

As the unappetizing infractions rack up, Ruby Restaurant closes for good

The latest—and likely last—development in the Ruby Restaurant brouhaha was announced in the Toronto Star this morning: the usually jam-packed Scarborough eatery  is closing for good. After a roach infestation, 22 salmonella cases and two inspection failures in one week, Ruby’s owners held an emergency meeting over the weekend at which they decided to declare bankruptcy. The DineSafe page for Ruby reads like a nasty report card, with a series of S and C marks (meaning “significant” and “crucial,” respectively) in such categories as “Operator fail to ensure food is not contaminated/adulterated” and “Operator fail to prevent an insect infestation”—nausea-inducing terms that prompted us to start searching out the DineSafe pages for some local eating spots.

Without getting into specifics, we will sign off with this: the words “conditional pass” become more terrifying when read over and over, and the city’s searchable DineSafe database is a great way to kill a few hours (if not a few cockroaches).
