Opening soon: The Drake Hotel General Store in Rosedale

drakegeneral

Yuk yuks: humour defines much of the General Store's merchandise (Photo by Karon Liu)

The Drake Hotel launched its General Store in 2008, garnering oodles of media attention for its kitschy Canadiana. This weekend, the Drake brand is venturing out of its West Queen West safety zone with the opening of a second General Store in Rosedale.

Located just north of Rosedale subway station on Yonge Street, the former Shop NYLA space has been transformed into a cozy log cabin in a mere three weeks, with wooden bins of knick-knacks, a rack of dark denim and flannel for urban lumberjacks, and shelves of the Canadian tchotchkes that made the original store such a hit among tourists and locals alike.

Like a glove: the ultimate skinny jeans

skinniesDespite having a legion of haters, skinny jeans aren’t going away—good news for Torontonians, since there’s no better pant to tuck into winter boots. With so many unflattering and uncomfortable versions around, we went on a hunt for the ultimate skinnies. Our pick: the very slim-cut Avedons by Citizens of Humanity, which are incredibly soft, made of a stretchy cotton, rayon, cupro and polyurethane blend that makes them feel more like leggings than jeans. They’re the best pair out there.

$213–$258 at Over the Rainbow, 110 Yorkville Ave., 416-967-7448, rainbowjeans.com.

Just opened: Carbon makes its footprint on midtown

The casual-cool menswear shop Carbon stocks such feel-good brands as Shared and Alternative Apparel (Photo by Karon Liu)

Consider Carbon, the new jeans and T-shirt boutique on the Yonge strip north of Eglinton, more as owner Alex Mazelow’s giant walk-in closet than a casual menswear shop. For one thing, Mazelow has tried on everything in the store (he was testing out a new pair of Ever jeans when we dropped by), and he has played mannequin for women shopping for their absent boyfriends.
