TIFF announces 50 films starring awesome famous people who might come to Toronto

Today’s edition of TIFF celebrity stalking is a little meatier, as co-directors Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey announced 50 films (15 galas, 35 special presentations, including 25 world premieres) and the whackitude of celebrities associated with them. We’ve got two Friends (Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer), the Gilmore Girls (Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel), the Mad Men man himself (Jon Hamm), Office favourite Rainn Wilson, the ever-intriguing Winona Ryder, plus Robert Redford, Woody Allen, Helen Mirren, Natalie Portman, Javier Bardem and more. Celebrity speculation begins: are Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Freida Pinto coming to TIFF?

We have a preliminary leak of some stars expected to attend TIFF this September. Martin Knelman of the Star dishes that The King’s Speech (starring Mr. Darcy himself, Colin Firth, and Geoffrey Rush) and Miral (Julian Schnabel’s new film starring Slumdog Millionaire beauty Freida Pinto, Vanessa Redgrave and Willem Dafoe) will have their world premieres at the festival.

Green Living Show lures Colin Firth to Toronto with award

Colin Firth will be coming to the Green Living Show on Saturday to receive the inaugural—pause for a deep breath—Green Living and Environmental Media Association International Entertainment Award (we’re calling it the GLEMAIE). He’s being recognized for opening a store that sells green products, but we think he’s being recognized for being able to sell tickets to an event.

Firth, along with his wife, Livia Giuggioli, and brother-in-law, Nicola Guiggioli, opened Eco Age in London three years ago, selling a hodgepodge of environmentally friendly products and offering consultations on how to make a space greener.

The Tastemakers’ Lounge: generous to the famous

Where’s a TIFF-goer to head for a semblance of home when they are miles before sleep? To the Tastemakers Lounge, of course. In its tenth year at the InterContinental, the gifting suite to the stars has gotten comfortable, feeling more like a super-yuppie condo than swag showroom.

Upon entrance to the airy, livable room, things soothed and wafted: neutral decor by Croma Design and PC Home, faintly spiced almonds mingling with inoffensive fragrances from D&G (most popular? L’Imperatrice; it translates to “The Star”). Box sets of AMC shows Mad Men and Breaking Bad went over big with the cast of Defendor—Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings—while bamboo tees by Guats went out on the backs of Colin Firth and Agora’s Oscar Isaac. Ally Sheedy got good hair from a Chiggy’s Touch stylist with Rowenta tools. Amanda Schull (danced most famously in Centre Stage, now more credibly in Mao’s Last Dancer) primped with Joe Fresh Beauty. And Ben Barnes, the wasted anti-hero of Dorian Gray, can now recover with the aid of his new PC Home personal water-filter bottle.

As for us, we just wanted to steal a silky pillow for our hollowed-out heads.

Tom Ford does not want to talk about the reason he’s famous

Hoping to get a glimpse of fashion icon Tom Ford, we visited The Sutton Place Hotel, where he was holding a press conference to discuss his directorial debut, A Single Man, which stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore and premiered at TIFF. Ford is best known for being the creative head of Gucci and starting his own line of men’s clothes under his own name. Much to our chagrin, however, he was hesitant to answer questions about fashion, making sure to repeat ad nauseam, “fashion and film are two separate types of expression. Fashion is a commercially creative outlet, whereas film is purely impressionistic.” The costumes, he said, were “to serve these characters. It wasn’t a costume parade for me.” When a reporter asked him what he was wearing, he scoffed, “Oh, we’re wearing… clothes.”

“We want the king, we want the king!”

At first we couldn’t decipher what the overzealous crowd was chanting, but as we drew closer to the masses outside the Windsor Arms, it became clear that it was not the king they wanted but the Cage. Nicolas, that is. The mob was gaining momentum and force, so when British actor Bill Nighy exited the hotel, an emergency PR situation dominoed: fans surged forward, magazines slapped magazines at Nighy and women on walkie-talkies were frantically trying to locate his driver. Cops had to buffer the mania so Nighy could escape. As he wandered in the direction of Theatre Books, all we could hear him say was “Where the fuck? What the fuck? Fuck!” An intense female wrangler yelled, “Bill—back inside!” She shouted louder, “Bill! Inside, let’s go!” ushering him in haste back in the embrace of the Windsor Arms. By the urgency in her tone, we thought the fans were about ready to rip his flesh off, like a scene from Shaun of the Dead.

Yearn after reading: A look back at TIFF 2008

In eager anticipation of September 10, the first day of 2009’s Toronto International Film Festival, we at TIFF.TO are already scheduling our videos, photo shoots and screenings for the big event. After looking through last year’s material for inspiration, we concluded that some of our Red Carpet Diaries videos (Adrien Brody, Ethan Hawke, Rachel McAdams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Colin Firth, the list goes on) are too much fun to keep to ourselves. To share the excitement, here are some of our favourite moments from TIFF ’08.

Celeb spotting warm-up 5: The full list of celeb guests is out, and Oprah and Clooney are on it

The much-anticipated official list of celebrities scheduled to attend TIFF arrived in our in-boxes this morning. We’re happy to report that two of the biggest names rumoured to be heading our way, George Clooney and Oprah, are definitely coming.

A lot of our other favourites have also confirmed: Big Love’s Amanda Seyfried, a reformed David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Drew Barrymore (perhaps we’ll spot her making eyes at locals at Sweaty Betty’s again), two of our three favourite Jennifers (Garner and Connelly; Aniston is a no-show), many Michaels (Caine, Cera, Douglas, Moore), the always lovely Natalie Portman, Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Polley, Tilda Swinton, Tom Ford, Viggo Mortensen and so many more.

The titles of some of TIFF‘s films (and stars speculated to show up to promote them) have been announced over the past few days. They range from Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut—with a surprisingly star-studded, funny-lady cast—to Michael Moore’s latest documentary. The sequel to Todd Solondz’s Happiness (which we thought was unsequalable), the latest comedy by the Coen brothers and Werner Herzog’s new crime-fest will also be screened. Colin Firth and Jessica Biel dine on College Street; Biel’s underwear unconfirmed

On College Street, at the new Grace Upstairs (formerly The Bird, which used to reek of smoke), Colin Firth and Jessica Biel relished a private dinner before their screening of Easy Virtue. We wonder if they went for the cookies and milk for dessert. Also among the things we will never know, and cannot confirm, is whether Biel was sporting undies that she may have purchased earlier that day while perusing the sexy Yorkville boutique Augustina.—Jen McNeely

We’re still crushing on Colin Firth from his Pride and Prejudice days—he stole our hearts as the brooding Mr. Darcy in the BBC version. Now, he’s in Toronto (with a beard!) promoting new film Genova.
