Six things we learned about Total Recall and the Toronto film industry

(Image: The original Total Recall)

Whether spotting Jessica Biel biking down Queen West (with beau Justin Timberlake no less), stretching with Colin Farrell at Yoga on Yonge Street or painstakingly avoiding Lakeshore Blvd. for a few days in July, Torontonians certainly felt the impact of Total Recall filming in the city. The Toronto Star goes so far to tout the film as saving Toronto’s film industry by funneling nearly $1 Billion into the municipal economy this summer. We looked into how the payout breaks down into Toronto’s economy. See the numbers after the jump.

Ethan Hawke makes a quick appearance at the Woman in the Fifth party, but Dave Matthews sticks around

David Rocco and Ethan Hawke (Image: Oscar Mach/Photagonist.ca)

It’s day four of TIFF and events are slowing down (okay, maybe we’re just slowing down), but we managed to make it out to the Roosevelt Room to catch Ethan Hawke, Colin Farrell and director Pawel Pawlikowski at the party for The Woman in the Fifth. We were informed that the film’s other lead, Kristin Scott Thomas, wouldn’t be attending since she’s apparently in South America, but another unpredictable star sighting made up for her absence: festival socialite extraordinaire Dave Matthews stopped by the party, having attended the screening earlier in the day, and he had only good things to say about the film and his time at TIFF (he’s a producer for the film).

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits Toronto with a premiere and a Hogwarts-themed party at Casa Loma

Welcome to Hogwarts at Casa Loma. (Image: Tara Sameshima)

It may be surprising to some (no one) that Harry Potter is a big deal for small children, teens, adults and the elderly. It was quite clear to us at last night’s premiere, where we saw a lineup of caped youngsters waiting in anticipation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the last chapter of J.K. Rowling’s famed series about a Jesus figure named Harry who sacrifices everything for the good of the witch and wizard (and everything fantasy—goblins, giants, ogres, dragons) community. Unfortunately for the ragtag group of wand-bearing wannabe wizards, a representative of the movie told us that the chances of the waiting-since-6-a.m. diehards getting access to the premiere was impossible, since even big media outlets had to be turned away.

Rumour had it (and perhaps this was the reason for many non-fans filling the seats at Scotiabank Theatre) that Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell would be in attendance, but not one graced the plush seats of Scotiabank Theatre or the rock walls of Casa Loma with their presence (the latter three of whom just happen to be among the biggest celebrities in the city). Check out which celebrities made a splash at the premiere and on the “black carpet” in a gallery after the jump.

Inside Soho House: Javier Bardem celebrated, Paul Haggis denied entry and Josh Brolin’s new BFF

A Biutiful night: Javier Bardem at the Soho House on Friday (Image: Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Grey Goose Vodka)

“Name?”
Paul Haggis.”
“I’m sorry, it’s not on the list.”

Josh Brolin, standing nearby with a cigarette, breaks into hysterics.

This was the scene last night at Soho House—a branch of the international members-only club that’s opened in Toronto just for the duration of TIFF—where stars of the highest wattage gathered to fête Javier Bardem and his new movie, Biutiful. The confusion eventually cleared up, partially thanks to a woman leaving the party who noted “he’s a director” and the hotly sought, Ontario-raised Oscar-winner swung into the lush party space. And yes, Brolin got in too.

From the Archives: a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments

Oh, Snap
This month, the Toronto International Film Festival celebrates its 35th year with a glossy new home in the Bell Lightbox. Much has changed since the inaugural year, when Hollywood studios turned up their noses at the fledging fest. Then again, much hasn’t. It’s still two weeks of celebrities and fans behaving badly. Here, a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments, from the coke-fuelled ’70s to the paparazzi-riddled oughties.

Even though it probably had the most star-packed cast of any movie at TIFF (Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, etc.), was directed by Terry Gilliam and had a lot of hype (it was Heath Ledger‘s last movie), we didn’t expect any of the truly big names to show up. TIFF is almost over, after all, and there was no press conference for the film. Plus, we saw the red carpet call sheet and the most recognizable names confirmed were Verne “Mini Me” Troyer and Tom Waits.

Colin Farrell hosts private dinner party at the Spoke Club

Our new-found crush

We hear that Colin Farrell continued his night of media-free partying at The Spoke Club on Monday night. Accompanied by Neil Jordan, director of Farrell’s TIFF film Ondine, Farrell dined with a small entourage of cast mates and producers in the private cellar of the club. Rumours abound that Bono was also in attendance, but our source didn’t actually see him. Apparently, they dined on prime beef, salmon and pork. One server gushed, “He called me love.” Another told us, “He smoked like every minute. He was on the patio a lot.” We’re sad we missed out, being at the media circus that was Cheval, when just across the way, we could have been hanging with our newest crush.

Colin Farrell’s four-step plan to win us over

farrell

Exhibit A: Farrell’s black fedora

We went to the Ondine press conference ready to dislike Colin Farrell. This is the guy who flips out at paps, drinks heavily and is generally just a rough and tumble dou… dude. He had U2 show up for the film’s premiere last night, and Bono tops our list of irrational celeb hate-ons. So when Farrell showed up wearing a fedora and plenty of jewellery, our claws were out. We were sadly disappointed. Turns out, he’s actually pretty likable. Here, Farrell’s four fast steps into our hearts.

Ed Norton celebrates Leaves of Grass premiere by ignoring media

The fierce Keri Russell (Photo by Jen McNeely)

Last night at Cheval, the famously withdrawn Ed Norton encountered a swarm of reporters upon his arrival to the Leaves of Grass after party. (He was not as lucky as Colin Farrell and Bono, who faced just one journo at their party at Atelier.) Media workers had been camped out for a couple of hours on King Street, but when the recluse arrived he had a snarl on his face that read, “I hate you. All of you.” He declined to walk the red carpet or even glance toward a camera. The party, billed as “Ed Norton Presents,” was really just Ed Norton Pissed.

Colin Farrell and Bono manage the impossible: a secret TIFF shindig

Luck o'the Irish: Colin Farrell and Bono find no media types at the Atelier cocktail hour

Luck o’ the Irish: Colin Farrell and Bono find no media types at the Atelier cocktail hour

Sadly, no paparazzi were invited to Colin Farrell and Bono’s cocktail hour at Atelier last night. In fact, no one even knew that they were there, save one tabloid reporter from Star magazine. He relayed that they were having a grand ol’ time, and that Bono circulated the crowd with ease, most likely because the rest of us story sniffers weren’t there to jam a Dictaphone in his face.

We’ll get you next time, gentlemen.

Paul Haggis closes the bar at the Artists for Peace and Justice fundraiser

The opportunity to walk on the set of an undisclosed major picture starring Russell Crowe was sold for $6,000, tea time with Diane Lane went for $3,000 but no invited guest was willing to gamble $5,000 for Casino Royale poker chips, worthy cause or not. Co-hosted by director and writer Paul Haggis and stunning actor Olivia Wilde of House, the charity event for Artists for Peace and Justice (Josh Brolin, James Franco, Oliver Stone and Charlize Theron are on the board) was well attended. Beyond supporting the cause, (helping children in Haiti), we suspect Hollywood also came out to shmooze Haggis, whose credits include Casino Royale, Million Dollar Baby and Oscar winner Crash. In attendance was Sex and The City’s Kim Catrall, the OC’s Peter Gallagher, bad-boy Colin Farrell and Twilight vamp Rachelle Lefevre.
