Six male style archetypes inspired by Toronto shop owners’ disdain for heritage dressing and fun socks

There are few manners of dress among men in Toronto, because so few are popular enough for independent retailers to endorse. We learned from Christopher Parker’s final “Dapper Gent” column in The Grid that Toronto shop owners want to see more colour and investment pieces (and therefore, put a nail in the coffin of fast fashion) and less “heritage” dressing, fun socks and raw denim. In other words, the same thing people in fashion say every year. So instead, we decided to look at it from the perspective of what the men on Toronto’s streets really want. There’s no better way to do that than to observe the world around us, and we’ve deduced that while city gents certainly play it safe, they seem perfectly happy filling a few classic archetypes. An informal list of those archetypes (there are six of them, by the by), what they like, what they don’t like and where they shop, after the jump.

Brooks Brothers set to open up second Toronto store at Bayview Village for spring 2012

Brooks Brothers will be opening a second Toronto location at Bayview Village, with an opening expected sometime around spring 2012, and what can be expected is everything we know and love about the heritage brand. The Financial District Brooks Brothers store boasts 22,000 square feet, while the Bayview store will only take up 10,000 square feet, but Brooks Brothers isn’t leaving anyone out, because they have confirmed that all house brands, from kids clothes to Black Fleece, will be on hand. The most exciting aspect of this whole development is that men have yet another opportunity to dress like Gordon Gekko.

Jeanne Beker’s favourite 100 stores in Toronto

Few would argue that Jeanne Beker isn’t the high priestess of fashion in Canada—the woman is a legend. We’re more familiar with watching Jeanne explore the runways of Paris than the streets of Toronto, so when Post City Magazines published Jeanne’s picks for the top 100 stores in Toronto, we set about dissecting it. We were able to suss out where her daughter’s bought their prom dresses (Betsey Johnson), the store that makes her drool (The Room), where she goes to find out what the cool kids are up to (Propaganda) and her neighbourhood standby (Gee Beauty). Check out the full list here.

The Path Guide: 24 spots worth getting lost for

(All photos by Karon Liu)

Even those who were born and raised in Toronto have a hard time navigating the city’s underground labyrinth, with its dead ends, identical food courts and utterly useless maps—not to mention the complete lack of sunlight, which can drive a person mad. Still, the world’s largest below-ground shopping complex is like a city of its own, with lots of unique shops, restaurants and attractions that are worth the slight possibility of getting cabin fever. An added incentive for people going to a game or a concert: most of the restaurants offer free parking. Here are 24 places to check out.

When it comes to sportswear, designer Ralph Dunning figured out that not all men want to pay a premium to look like a walking NASCAR vehicle. So in 2001, the Torontonian, who competed in the Iron Man competition last month (Craig Alexander took the crown), started a line that combines Brooks Brothers’ country club aesthetic with Nike-like technology at prices that rival, if not beat, those at the mall.

Tom Ford will design for women again, faux-hawks for babies, designers ditch Toronto fashion week

66ème Festival de Venise (Mostra)

Rejoice: Tom Ford returns to womenswear (Photo by Nicolas Genin)

• Sure, swine flu is going around, but that’s no reason to be impolite. As fashion week presses on, Torontonians continue to embrace the oh-so-European double-cheek kiss as their preferred greeting. May we suggest Cold FX? [Toronto Star]

Tom Ford has confirmed he will be creating a line of womenswear for his eponymous label. Cue sighs from everyone who thinks Gucci hasn’t been the same without the dreamy designer. Ford is waiting for financing before launching, but some sources say the line could be ready as early as fall 2010. [WWD]

• We’ve already got babies in Che Guevara tees, Uggs and Canada Goose jackets, and now we’ll be able to artfully faux-hawk their hair thanks to Le Baby Hair Gel. Free of such irritants as fragrance and parabens, the gel is safe to use on baby scalps, and perfect for taming annoying frizzies and fly-aways. [Bella Sugar]
