Conrad Black Book Club: A Matter of Principle, Chapter 11 (wherein Black compares himself to Job)

CONRAD BLACK BOOK CLUB Chapter 11

After what seems like a million pages (it’s actually 310), Conrad Black has finally been indicted. Boosted by testimony from David Radler (whom Black calls “the nasty gnome from Chicago”), the U.S. government is seeking a 95-year prison sentence. Plot-wise, we expected things to pick up around now—but instead Black just returns to his favourite topics: being poor, being persecuted by the media, and being friends with Elton John.

Conrad Black Book Club: A Matter of Principle, Chapter 10 (wherein Peter C. Newman’s imagination is ghoulishly prurient)

CONRAD BLACK BOOK CLUB Chapter 9

The action picks up with Conrad and Barbara enjoying the pleasant August heat on their Bridle Path terrace and engaging in some amateur nature observations (deer, foxes, raccoons, skunks) with a tipple of white wine. Meanwhile, Barbara gets her job back at Maclean’s and the pair hang with Elton John (again). Sounds like paradise.

Conrad Black Book Club: A Matter of Principle, Chapter 7: wherein Conrad is charged with crimes

CONRAD BLACK BOOK CLUB Chapter 7

As chapter seven opens, Conrad Black recalls the release of Richard Breeden’s lengthy investigative report called, somewhat hilariously, “A Corporate Kleptocracy.” Surprisingly, the long-awaited publication is a relief to Black—all of the alleged “skullduggery” turned out to just be rehashed accusations. Not much new information came out of the report, which, incidentally, is how we’re starting to feel about the Baron’s memoir (although it is expanding our vocabulary).

Bringing Sexy Back: Chris Nuttall-Smith takes on Aria and Toca

After three years of restaurant restraint, Aria and Toca, two unabashedly flashy new spots, are giving diners a reason to get dressed up again

Opulence, I missed you. I missed high thread-count table linens and hand-blown water glasses and even edible gold leaf a little. I missed the dining rooms whose owners gave carte blanche to talented designers, insisting only on “something grand.” But mostly, I missed gasping when I walked into restaurants—having to stop to take a space in, to admire. Though restraint wasn’t all bad for dining culture these past few years, it wasn’t always easy on the eyes.

Two ambitious, expensive, flashy new dining rooms have opened downtown in recent months, one of them from a hotel chain that’s synonymous with conspicuous luxury, the other from a pair of neighbourhood restaurateurs who’ve come out shooting for the moon. Both are fine dining (more or less), and both are likely to make you gasp when you enter.

House of the Week: $3.8 million for this ’50s-meets-the-future eco-house near the Bridle Path

Though built in 2007, the house has a 1950s mod aesthetic, thanks to patient owners who took almost a year to find the perfect space to transform. They opted for an enormous lot (88.58 by 187.84 feet) near the Bridle Path and constructed a home with massive open spaces and huge floor-to-ceiling windows. The dining room comes summer-ready, with doors that open to the backyard and a gleaming outdoor kitchen, complete with a barbecue, sink, mini-fridge and eight-person table.

Bang Bang on the Bridle Path: inside the after party with Ryan Phillippe and Malin Akerman

Toronto's own Malin Akerman arrives at a private residence on the Bridle Path last night for the Bang Bang Club after party (Image: Sonia Recchia/Getty Images )

Toronto’s rich and not-so-famous mingled through the house that hair built Wednesday night at the after party for Ryan Phillippe’s South African photojournalist drama The Bang Bang Club. Ray Civello, owner of the Civello salons and the man behind many of Aveda’s Canadian institutions, threw the soirée at his Bridle Path residence. A dashingly suited-up Phillippe sank into the white leather sofas of the VIP quarters, overlooking the home’s wide-open courtyard, joined by his Canadian co-star Malin Akerman. One guest remembered when the 32-year-old actress was slinging drinks back at Bar 606. “I remember when she used to clean the bathrooms,” she says. “She was King Street before it was King Street.”
