Looking back at TIFF 2010: Nick Di Donato on how to throw a film festival party

Rick Campanelli hangs out at ET Canada's parking garage party

Nick Di Donato, president and CEO of Liberty Entertainment Group, is sitting in his newest Yorkville restaurant, Ciao, where just days ago Bill Gates broke bread with John Legend. Four storeys above is the parking lot that was transformed for four days into Entertainment Tonight Canada’s Festival Central, where a fab four-party weekend took place, all under Di Donato’s direction. The man behind the Rosewater Supper Club, Tattoo Rock Parlour, Spice Route and C Lounge—just to scratch the surface of his empire—and veteran of 15 TIFFs reflects on film festival parties past and present.

Are the doomsayers right? Is it the end for Yorkville as TIFF epicentre?

The mean streets of King West (Image: Google Maps)

With the Bell Lightbox TIFF headquarters at King and John finished, doomsayers have begun predicting the demise of Yorkville as the festival epicentre. The new Lightbox—with its five screening rooms, festival programming and trendy new restaurants—is obviously going to provide Yorkville’s facilities with some competition. It’s also across from the Hyatt Regency, the official host hotel, and very close to the Thompson Hotel, where Shenae Grimes, Adrian Grenier and Enrique Iglesias have been spotted recently.

Brad Pitt wins bidding war for rights to Canadian author’s first novel

With Canadian programming shafted from fall TV lineups, it’s nice to know that our lit is still getting some international love. Brad Pitt’s production company has snapped up the film rights to The Imperfectionists, a first novel by Vancouver-raised, U of T–educated Tom Rachman about a flailing English-language paper in Rome.

Christopher Buckley’s gushing review of the book in the New York Times—in which he claims, “[The book] is so good I had to read it twice simply to figure out how he pulled it off”—sparked a bidding war among a number of producers. Brad, of course, came out on top, as he does in most areas of life.

Bloody hell: Brits complain Yanks are stealing their vampires

Vampires used to be classy (Image: Derrick Tyson)

Vampires: too sparkly, too emo and now too American in the eyes of “vampire experts” (what a job title!) who congregated at a conference called Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture last month to take the vampires back from Twihards.

Academics gathered at the University of Herfordshire, located north of London, to discuss the state of vampires in modern culture. “I wanted to prove you can study popular literature in a serious way,” says conference creator Sam George. “I have set up this conference driven by the desire to put the British vampire back on the map.”

Brits think Canada is 10th most attractive country

Jessica Stam on the cover of Vogue Korea

Tenth? We’ll take it. Five thousand Brits were surveyed in an on-line poll to rank the most attractive people in the world, and Canucks rounded out the top 10. In first place are Americans, followed by Brazilians, Spaniards and Australians.

Other countries that outranked us include Sweden, England, India and France, but there are easy explanations for this. The participants probably think everyone in the U.S. looks like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (obviously they haven’t seen People of Walmart). Brazil, Spain, France and Sweden are where supermodels are born, and Australians keep fit by surfing and playing volleyball in bikinis year-round. Also, India’s Bollywood industry probably made them think it’s a country of Aishwarya Rais. (And, of course, it’s not surprising that Brits would consider themselves not too shabby in the looks department.)

Snake charming: Daniel Espinosa cobra cocktail ring

CobraringReptiles have always creeped us out, but we’re reconsidering our aversion after finding this cobra ring ($565), part of the Myths and Fantasies collection from Daniel Espinosa. The stones, hand-set cubic zirconia fused with different metals to achieve the rich colours, sit on a base of sterling silver (both regular and oxidized, for a black finish) and 24-karat gold. Serpentine jewellery is all the rage right now, from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s line for British luxury goods retailer Asprey to the more affordable rings at Club Monaco. Snake handling has never been more glamorous.

Brad and Angelina are jewellery designers, MC Hammer won’t discuss harem pants, man-gagement rings are the next wedding trend

Zac Posen, beloved by stars for his red carpet numbers, is reaching out to Lower East Siders (read: hipsters) with Z Spoke, a more affordable line of clothes to be sold at Saks Fifth Avenue this spring. The clothes, which Posen describes as “minimalist and utilitarian,” are priced from $78 to $675, a steal compared to his namesake line, where a gown can fetch $12,000. With any luck, Z Spoke will be available on Saks’ Web site, which ships to Canada. [WWD]

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have designed a collection for the famed British jeweller Asprey. The proceeds from the collection—mainly serpentine items, like coiled snake rings and necklaces—will be donated to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, a charity that works to educate youth war victims. Jolie picked the snaky theme because she sees serpents as protectors; we bet Jennifer Aniston can think of a different reason. [BBC]

The Final Goodbye

Our eyes feel like they’re bleeding; our lungs are steel wool. There are 13 empty cups and bottles surrounding our laptop. Every so often we reach to take a sip and—blech!—that latte’s from last week, circa Burn After Reading. Press releases, batteries, loose change, Vaseline and deteriorating apples litter our desks. Caressing our feet are swag bags, many of the boxes half-open from 3 a.m. chocolate quests. A dead moth has been wilted in a puddle of Baileys for nine days, and each day we check to see if it has altered form; for whatever reason, this was a source of comfort. Days were spent tearing through Yorkville, dashing from one interview to the next, stalking celebrities and making friends with doormen. Subsisting on coffee and nuts, we plowed through the streets like vamped-up Harriet the Spies, ears perked and eyes alert for the most provocative scoop. In the evening, clothes were torn off and makeup pressed on; then, a game began to find glamour in the pile of dirty laundry. A hobble up to Dundas in ridiculously steep stilettos would end with the violent hailing of a cab. Nights were a maze, us searching endlessly for the most happening TIFF hoo-ha, knocking back a half-dozen dirty martinis along the way. So many new friends were made! Returning home, battered by the decadence, the night would end with some bleary-eyed typing, sorting of all the miscellaneous cards collected (“Henry who?”), and two Advil for good measure.

Now, when we look into the immediate future, all we see are country fairs, pumpkins and corn. The biggest thing on our agenda is what to be for Halloween, and this is making us angry. We miss you, Brad Pitt! Goodbye, everyone! Until next year.—Jen McNeely

THE BEST & WORST OF TIFF ’08: Our Scene & Herd reporters list their most desperate moments, most exciting celebrity encounters and most hostile starlet

Most unexpected confession from a celebrity: “I mean, I have sex…and my sex is very, very boring. Very sloppy. I mean, I’m a total bottom and don’t get up on top,” said Kevin Smith, director of Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Most frustrating “look but don’t touch” moment: The cake buffet at the Holt Renfrew bash was for your eyes only. And once, Brad Pitt was 20 feet away, giving us a raised-eyebrow stare-down, but he remained totally off limits. Many more best and worsts, after the jump.

TIFF Round-Up: A short look at the festival that was

And…scene. TIFF is over for another year. We heard good things about The Wrestler and bad things about Burn After Reading (“burn after viewing” some say). A few critics grouched about the cult of celebrity that grips the city once a year, recalling those halcyon days when it was all about the films, while other critics got whacked with binders of some kind while trying to see one of said films. Someone crashed the InStyle party (not us—we wouldn’t have been wearing head-to-toe black). No one crashed One X One (though an attempt was made). Brad Pitt came, saw and split. Yeah, it was quite the year.

Brad Pitt tells us how to play a moron, while the Coen brothers find inspiration in Linda Tripp

Brad Pitt strolled into the Burn After Reading press conference with coffee in hand, appearing like he had fallen from a bed. He looked adorably scruffy, with mischievous eyes and a perfectly chilled-out demeanour. Close behind were Bowie-esque powerhouse Tilda Swinton, the confidently cool Coen brothers and always-a-tad-eerie John Malkovich. Cameras fluttered in a tizzy of excitement that sounded like a hundred hummingbirds swarming around sweet nectar. Unfortunately, in this case, licking the bait (read: Brad) was off limits. Brad’s first statement: “And last question?” A roar of nervous laughter erupts from the press. No one seems to know where this press conference is headed. After the jump, more from Brad and the Coen brothers.
