Best cookbooks of 2009, five tips for dining with kids, Paul Sorvino gets into the tomato sauce racket

EarthToTable• Lucy Waverman’s list of the top cookbooks of 2009 has (like the Junos) both Canadian and international winners. Canadian authors Jeff Crump and Bettina Schormann score for their locavore tome Earth to Table: Seasonal Recipes From an Organic Farm, though Waverman chastises them for not featuring any Canadian chefs. Prince Edward Islander Michael Smith gets a nod for The Best of Chef at Home: Essential Recipes for Today’s Kitchen. We’re intrigued, considering that Smith is incessantly advocating cooking without a recipe on his Food Network show. Internationally, chef David Chang of Momofuku (the name of his restaurants and book) gets a nod, as does Thomas Keller. [Globe and Mail]

Michelle Obama on Sesame Street, coffee spared tax hike, chocolate cures stress

• Michelle Obama dropped by Sesame Street on the show’s 40th anniversary to chat with a basket of anthropomorphic vegetables about the importance of healthy eating. Obama, who was joined by Elmo and Big Bird (both look remarkably fresh for 40), talked about how tomatoes, carrots and lettuce make it from field to table. In an interview afterward, the First Lady said that the experience was “probably the best thing I’ve done so far in the White House.” [Telegraph]

• Retreating from the potential wrath of a coffee-addicted citizenry, the McGuinty Liberals have announced new exemptions from Ontario’s harmonized sales tax (HST). A Tim Hortons double-double will continue to incur only the five per cent GST. Venti frappuccinos from Starbucks, however, are a different story, since restaurant items costing more than $4 will face the full 13 per cent tax. Newspapers also get an exemption previously extended only to books, feminine hygiene products, diapers, children’s clothing and kids’ booster seats. [Toronto Star]

Meal-o-matic: is this the future of food?

Meal-o-matic: is this the future of food? (Photo by Bonnie Burton)

• Chinese restaurant chain I Robot is being picketed by chefs who say their robot counterparts—which each do the job of five humans—are putting them out of work. The restaurants in Guangxi province need only one lonely food chopper to stock ingredients; the robots prepare whatever the waiter punches into a computer. Manager Huang Xianghao had discouraging words for the disgruntled chefs: “The robot chefs are more efficient and hygienic. And they don’t complain.” [Austrian Times]

Bon Appetit has named its favourite 10 new American restaurants and recommended dishes to try at each. Manhattan didn’t make the cut, but Brooklyn’s No. 7 represented the five NYC boroughs with its pumpkin seed–crusted tofu. The clam and calamari seafood stew got Mado of Chicago on the list, alongside Hungry Mother in Cambridge, The Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland and Bar Jules in San Francisco. [Canadian Press]
