SPOTTED: Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio feeding the stars at last week’s Moneyball cast dinner

When you’re feeding Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Anna Faris and Jonah Hill at the Moneyball cast dinner, it makes sense to spring for decent grub, which is presumably why the people behind the Vitamin Water rooftop at the Burroughes Building brought in Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio to cook for the stars last Friday. Before dinner, the guests munched on pork belly confit wrapped in Boston bibb lettuce and threw back watermelon gazpachos with cucumber and tobiko. The meal itself began with (among other dishes) hamachi crudo with coriander vinaigrette and celery hearts, and ricotta ravioli with roasted summer squash, before moving on to mains like roasted diver scallops with shallot butter and preserved lemon, and red wine–braised short ribs with baby root veggies. It finished off with an assortment of petit fours. Sadly, we were not in attendance.

TIFF Weekend Roundup: the five buzziest red carpets

Angelina Jolie wears a gold purse handcuffed to her wrist as she poses with Brad Pitt (Image: Lia Grainger)

The first weekend of TIFF is basically one big long party, with a non-stop crush of big premieres, boldface names and tremendous amounts of running around (sleep is usually not involved). In case you missed it, here are last weekend’s five most talked about red carpets:

  • A wall of screams surrounded Roy Thomson Hall on Friday for the gala presentation of Moneyball. The culprits? Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie (whose purse was handcuffed to her wrist), Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jonah Hill. Check out our red carpet gallery »
  • The Ides of March was a kind of passing of the torch from the charming, ageless George Clooney to the charming, youthful Ryan Gosling (who brought his mother along as his date). Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood also shone. Check out our red carpet gallery »
  • Michael Fassbender didn’t show, but Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen brought star power to the Canadian premiere of David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method. Check out our red carpet gallery »
  • Kirsten Dunst, elegant as ever in a polka-dot top, stole the show at the gala for Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (although Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland were also there). Check out our red carpet gallery »
  • Take This Waltz saw a gushing Sarah Polley (it’s only her second feature, after all) and a very pregnant Jennifer Podemski (along with co-stars Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman). Check out our red carpet gallery »

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Philip Seymour Hoffman on the red carpet for Moneyball

Moneyball Red Carpet

Brangelina

Screaming fans stretched from Wellington to King Street waiting for the horde of stars associated with director Bennett Miller’s bound-to-be-a-blockbuster flick Moneyball to walk the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall. Real-life baseball player David Justice showed, and so too did Chris Pratt, grinning ear-to-ear, alongside wife Anna Faris. Practiced as he as at this rigmarole, Philip Seymour Hoffman still seemed bewildered by the spectacle and exited the carpet as quickly as possible, much to the chagrin of autograph-starved super-fans. The crowd chanted, “Jonah Hill,” and the slimmed-down star leaned over to Miller and said, “Remember that first dinner we had in Malibu, seven years ago?” See who arrived next, after the jump (hint: her purse is locked to her wrist).

RED CARPET POLL: Who dressed the best on night two of TIFF 2011?

Tilda Swinton is in town for We Need to Talk About Kevin and was spotted at the Grey Goose Soho House looking fetching in green, while Evan Rachel Wood showed some personality in a menswear-inspired suit (complete with hat) at the same super-secret location. Marisa Tomei flashed some colour on the red carpet for The Ides of March premiere, and Angelina Jolie showed up with a handcuffed purse, proving once more that she’s always trying to get our attention. Match made in 3-D heaven: James Cameron and Cirque du Soleil

(Image: WEBN-TV)

In hindsight, this story seems inevitable. Epic director James Cameron will be teaming up with the equally epic Cirque du Soleil in a family-oriented 3-D feature film. Cirque in 3-D! It’s so obvious. Mike Fleming of Deadline reports that the film will combine narrative storytelling with Cirque’s signature brand of insane physical wizardry. Scenes featuring Cirque performances are currently being shot in Las Vegas, where the troupe has several ongoing shows. Those performances will feature as the backdrop to a magical world the main character will enter. Cirque is apparently providing the financing, with Cameron on board as producer. This feels like a match made in visually spectacular heaven. It’s as if Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt decided to get together and make a baby…only the baby wears spandex and flies off the screen. Careful, Shiloh.

Brits think Canada is 10th most attractive country

Jessica Stam on the cover of Vogue Korea

Tenth? We’ll take it. Five thousand Brits were surveyed in an on-line poll to rank the most attractive people in the world, and Canucks rounded out the top 10. In first place are Americans, followed by Brazilians, Spaniards and Australians.

Other countries that outranked us include Sweden, England, India and France, but there are easy explanations for this. The participants probably think everyone in the U.S. looks like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (obviously they haven’t seen People of Walmart). Brazil, Spain, France and Sweden are where supermodels are born, and Australians keep fit by surfing and playing volleyball in bikinis year-round. Also, India’s Bollywood industry probably made them think it’s a country of Aishwarya Rais. (And, of course, it’s not surprising that Brits would consider themselves not too shabby in the looks department.)

Snake charming: Daniel Espinosa cobra cocktail ring

CobraringReptiles have always creeped us out, but we’re reconsidering our aversion after finding this cobra ring ($565), part of the Myths and Fantasies collection from Daniel Espinosa. The stones, hand-set cubic zirconia fused with different metals to achieve the rich colours, sit on a base of sterling silver (both regular and oxidized, for a black finish) and 24-karat gold. Serpentine jewellery is all the rage right now, from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s line for British luxury goods retailer Asprey to the more affordable rings at Club Monaco. Snake handling has never been more glamorous.

Brad and Angelina are jewellery designers, MC Hammer won’t discuss harem pants, man-gagement rings are the next wedding trend

Zac Posen, beloved by stars for his red carpet numbers, is reaching out to Lower East Siders (read: hipsters) with Z Spoke, a more affordable line of clothes to be sold at Saks Fifth Avenue this spring. The clothes, which Posen describes as “minimalist and utilitarian,” are priced from $78 to $675, a steal compared to his namesake line, where a gown can fetch $12,000. With any luck, Z Spoke will be available on Saks’ Web site, which ships to Canada. [WWD]

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have designed a collection for the famed British jeweller Asprey. The proceeds from the collection—mainly serpentine items, like coiled snake rings and necklaces—will be donated to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, a charity that works to educate youth war victims. Jolie picked the snaky theme because she sees serpents as protectors; we bet Jennifer Aniston can think of a different reason. [BBC]

Lady Gaga named top style maker, Roots releases its Olympics line, fate of Gucci film in peril

Miley Cyrus: teeny bopper slash fashion designer (Photo by Mike Schmid)

Roots may have lost the bid to be the official Olympics clothier (that honour went to The Bay), but the brand is still capitalizing on the upcoming games with its Canada collection. The clothes and accessories are simple, boring, even, with Canadian flags and Cs emblazoned on them. We expect more from Roots—after all, the company made berets popular again. [Toronto Star]

• London H&M stores will hand out wristbands to the first 160 people in line to clamour for the Jimmy Choo diffusion line of clothing and accessories. The wristbands are designed to calm the chaos that inevitably ensues whenever a diffusion line hits the stores. Good luck, H&M. We were at the Yonge and Dundas location when the Matthew Williamson collection was released and were nearly trampled. Not that we wouldn’t claw our way to the new Choo pieces. [The Telegraph]

• We wanted to hate Miley Cyrus’ collaboration with designer Max Azria, we really did. But her collection, which is sold at Wal-Mart, includes some great pieces (like ruffle-neck chiffon shirts and a grey bomber jacket) at unbelievable prices—nothing is over $20 U.S. No word yet on whether the collaboration will come to Canadian stores. [Lucky]

Conga line at Park Hyatt goes absolutely nowhere (or, come back, celebrities, we miss you already)

“Where are we going?” said the messy conga line on the Park Hyatt rooftop last night. The response? “Where aren’t we going!” Apparently, someone in the financial district got wind that there was a festival happening in Toronto—who knew?—and brought all their broker buddies to the top of the Hyatt to hang with the celebrities. The minute the celebs left, the classiest joint in town reverted to a deteriorating Copacabana of bottom feeders who thought they had dodged security and made it to the VIP. After the jump, our sad, hilarious collisions with two of them.

Angelina Jolie’s life is more interesting than yours

Sniffing for some dirt on the celebs, we asked celebrity stylist Sandra Graham which of the many divas she’s worked with was the biggest nightmare. Instead we were met with absolute praise for, who else, Angelina Jolie. “She’s just so nice, no temper tantrums. She wears Nicole Miller not Christian Dior..you know? Very low key. I just loved working with her!” Unpretentious, drop dead gorgeous, caregiver to the world, bangin’ Brad; it’s almost angering how perfect Ms. Jolie is. Sigh.—Jen McNeely

Funny Games (**)

Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, both his original 1997 Austrian film and the new (more or less) shot-for-shot American remake, is like that relentless, twerpy guy in your Intro to Philosophy class: disagree with him all you want, but he’ll just keep finding ways to use your arguments against you. To rail against Funny Games for being cruel, manipulative and juvenile is to play right into its caustic little palm: if you hate it and leave, you’re a hypocrite; if you love it (or hate it and stay anyway) you’re a sadist.
