TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester and Allison Janney at the premiere of The Oranges

Leighton Meester signs autographs for the fans (Image: Gary Campbell)

Last night saw the premiere of suburban morality tale The Oranges at the Winter Garden theatre (scheduled in a dueling time slot with the Russell Peters flick Breakaway, which played at the Elgin below). Oliver Platt was the first to arrive at the premiere, followed by cast members Allison Janney and Hugh Laurie. Leighton Meester emerged from a Goodnight Gansevoort limousine in a white lace Alexander McQueen dress. Unlike her co-stars who marched immediately into the theatre, 25-year-old Meester stepped off the red carpet to greet the swarming fans and sign autographs. Before the movie, first-time director Julian Farino informed the crowd that he’d only finished the film four days ago (his parents had flown over from England for the occasion).

Hot Bollywood celebrities and, uh, Jermaine Jackson on the green carpet at the 2011 IIFA Rocks fashion show

Bipasha Basu is drop-dead gorgeous. (Image: David Pike)

On Friday night, Bollywood’s glitterati took over Ricoh Coliseum for the IIFA Rocks concert and fashion show. The green carpet outside of the venue was practically a runway show itself, with stars like Anupam Kher, Sonakshi Sinha and Genelia D’Souza wearing a mix of Indian (Falguni and Shane Peacock) and Western (Alexander McQueen) designers. Jermaine Jackson, Micheal Jackson’s older brother, was also on the runway, but the former Big Brother UK contestant’s appearance wasn’t completely random—he was the opening act for the runway shows.

The Find: a simple silk shift with a complicated print

Since the death of Alexander McQueen just over a year ago, the fashion world has strongly embraced the psychedelic printed garments he made famous, pulling the look from obscurity into the mainstream. But if you’ve been keeping up with Toronto designers, you would know that it’s been one of Zoran Dobric’s signatures since he began his line in 2005. Dobric has always played with pattern and print, but has really refined his line over the past few years by simplifying shapes and using finer materials. We love this simple shift dress made from 100 percent silk, sporting a techie take on traditional patterns. $345.

Label alert: Intermix to open flagship Toronto location this fall

Label hounds will have fresh hunting grounds come fall 2011. American luxury retailer Intermix has announced it’s opening its first Canadian location with a 2,500-square-foot store on Bloor Street. According to a story on Women’s Wear Daily’s Web site, Intermix CEO Khajak Keledjian feels Canadian locations are key to breaking into international markets: “Why shouldn’t we be in every international city in Canada? After that, it will be easier to go to Western Europe.”

For Straight-from-SoHo Fashion
Crowds huddled in Ossington’s doorways are a familiar sight, but nothing compares to the sidewalk jams that form when Jonathan and Olivia owner Jackie O’Brien holds her biannual sales (starting on Boxing Day and again in June or July). Cool kids, designers, ad execs and artsy-leaning scions flock here for deconstructed hipster wear from Manhattan, Sweden and the U.K., by the likes of Alexander Wang, Rag and Bone, Band of Outsiders, Engineered Garments, and Wings and Horns. All up to 50 per cent off. E-mail info@jonathanandolivia.com to get on the list.

FOR Big European Labels
Toronto retail veteran Elsa Reia was hosting sample sales long before they were in vogue, which explains her all-star roster of designer brands: apparel, accessories and footwear from Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, Martin Margiela, Lanvin, Isabel Marant and more. The blowout runs over two days in April and October. Expect a variety of sizes and inventory, from recent and past seasons, marked down by 70 per cent or more. E-mail info@reiastudio.com to sign up.

TIFF’s worst dressed

Because any dress that makes its wearer do this in front of a camera crew makes our list. (Image: Karon Liu)

This year’s worst-dressed list was far easier to put together than our best-dressed roundup. (Overall, the fashion choices were too safe, too casual and sometimes just plain wrong. Take a look at the festival’s sartorial lowlights in our slide show below.

Two Robert Lepage productions coming to Toronto, both shorter than nine hours

The Andersen Project will premiere here in October (Image: Ex Machina)

To say that Torontonians love Robert Lepage is kind of like saying that we love the Leafs. (Except that Lepage is, you know, insanely successful.) Ever since the Quebec City director-actor-writer-filmmaker launched his opera career here 16 years ago, local audiences and critics have been tripping over each other for superlatives to describe the multi-tasker’s work. Last summer, we happily sat through his nine-hour mind blower, Lipsynch, at Luminato; and in the fall, we were slack-jawed when he created, as far as we know, the only orchestra pit slash swimming pool in existence for the world premiere of The Nightingale and Other Short Fables at the COC.

Canadian style so hot, HBC Web site crashes

Smythe's blanket coat for The Bay (Photo by Carlo Mendoza)

With Alexander McQueen Olympic scarves and maple leaf mitts at a premium, Canada is officially, like, so hot right now. So it was no surprise when we took a look at the catwalks recently and saw a bit of home.

The boys at Dolce and Gabbana took a page out of DSquared2‘s look book for their D&G line. The fall-winter 2010 show in Milan lacked the polished Italian glam we expected; instead, snow bunny models looking ready for après ski at Cypress Mountain strutted in patterned leg warmers and tights, reindeer- and snowflake-patterned knits and fur mukluks.

Greta Constantine designers search for American interest in menswear line

The second instalment of their blog series for the National Post finds Toronto designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong of Greta Constantine in the midst of New York fashion week. First on their agenda is a stop at a Tribeca Starbucks, as part of the process of “assimilating into American culture.” (Perhaps the trek to the Times Square Tim Hortons was too far.) Next, the two discussed The City and the spectacularly petulant cattiness of Olivia Palermo and Erin Kaplan (two of The City’s main “cast members”) while shopping at Marc by Marc Jacobs and the Alexander McQueen store.

Celebrities are out, Alexander McQueen label lives on, Tyra Banks tones down look

• Tabloids may need to cross fashion shows off their list of places to snap Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan throwing a hissy fit. There’s a noticeable dearth of celebrity presence at New York fashion week, in part because designers can’t afford to pay the costs (airfare, per diem, outfits) associated with having stars sit in the front row. But mainly, celebrities have become too stale in an industry that’s always on the hunt for what’s new. [New York Times]

Alexander McQueen’s label will continue on without the designer, who committed suicide last week. McQueen had finished most of his fall collection, which will show during Paris fashion week. François-Henri Pinault, president of French luxury group PPR, said, “This would be the best tribute that we could offer to him.” [BBC]

Designer Alexander McQueen found dead

The Daily Mail has reported that British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has committed suicide. From the article:

A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: ‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’

The news comes days before the start of London fashion week, and three years after the suicide of McQueen’s close friend and patron Isabella Blow. Full details of his death have not yet been released.

Update: The BBC has published a statement from McQueen’s office, which follows. In it, the designer is referred to as Lee, his given first name.

Fashion types give Haiti the double kiss

A look from David Dixon's spring 2010 collection (Photo by Jenna Marie Wakani)

Despite a semi-controversial new study that found luxury consumers to be more selfish than frugal shoppers, fashion’s elite have opened their designer wallets to help relief efforts in Haiti. This Thursday in Toronto, Cosmo TV and swanky downtown venue The Roosevelt Room will host Haute Couture for Haiti, a fashion show fundraiser with David Dixon and a slew of Project Runway Canada runners up (Jessica Biffi, Brandon R. Dwyer and Lucian Matis) showing looks from their spring-summer 2010 collections, which will then be auctioned off for charity.

South of the border, fashion designer Donna Karan hosted A Night of Humanity fundraiser in the midst of prep for Mercedes-Benz fashion week, which starts tomorrow. In the U.K., Naomi Campbell and first lady Sarah Brown are hosting Hope for Haiti Now, a fashion show on February 18, a day before London Fashion Week, featuring dresses for auction by Alexander McQueen, Dolce and Gabbana and Vivienne Westwood. Lady Gaga is also in a giving mood: she will part with her Gary Card–designed skeleton corset and give it to the highest bidder, with proceeds going to Oxfam International.

Zac Posen, beloved by stars for his red carpet numbers, is reaching out to Lower East Siders (read: hipsters) with Z Spoke, a more affordable line of clothes to be sold at Saks Fifth Avenue this spring. The clothes, which Posen describes as “minimalist and utilitarian,” are priced from $78 to $675, a steal compared to his namesake line, where a gown can fetch $12,000. With any luck, Z Spoke will be available on Saks’ Web site, which ships to Canada. [WWD]

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have designed a collection for the famed British jeweller Asprey. The proceeds from the collection—mainly serpentine items, like coiled snake rings and necklaces—will be donated to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, a charity that works to educate youth war victims. Jolie picked the snaky theme because she sees serpents as protectors; we bet Jennifer Aniston can think of a different reason. [BBC]
