THE SCENE: Moon launches menswear at TIFF Bell Lightbox

Moon’s one year anniversary party (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Last Thursday, in the Malaparte room at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Jordin and Saul Mimran’s Moon celebrated its one-year anniversary with a party that included the launch of the brand’s basic menswear line. Leigh Lezark from DJ collective the Misshapes provided the music, only occasionally conversing with Toronto media and friends of the Mimran clan. Guests included designer Alfred Sung, The Bay’s Suzanne Timmins and Christopher Sherman, writer Sarah Nicole Prickett, Ports 1961 campaign creative director Tu Ly, In Fashion’s Glen Baxter and socialite and event planner Ainsley Kerr. Dream-casting The Real Housewives of Toronto: seven ideal stars for the Canada-bound reality show

We learned recently that the Real Housewives franchise is officially looking into a Canadian spinoff. No word for sure on which major city will get the nod, but Toronto seems like an obvious choice. According to the Post’s Shinan Govani, our top duelling divas Stacey Kimmel and Suzanne Rogers have already declined offers to participate. Meanwhile, the city’s original glitter girl Catherine Nugent told ET Canada that she “wouldn’t even consider” an offer.

Luckily, not all Toronto socialites have such resolve. Govani reported that Jessica Mulroney, wife to Ben and new mom to the couple’s new chinny-chin twins, is “in talks” (though her hubby later recanted on her behalf). Ainsley Kerr, the best local example of the famous-for-being-famous phenomenon, played coy when asked about her involvement. We thought you had to be married or divorced to be qualify as a Housewife, but maybe not.

Depending on your feelings about trash television, this is either the best news since So You Think You Can Dance Canada, or a sign of the cultural apocalypse. Personally, we think a show like this would be must-see TV. Torontonians are so stiff and serious—a little mudslinging might do us some good. And so—with our fingers crossed and our PVRs primed—we set about coming up with the ultimate cast list for The Real Housewives of Toronto. Our picks, after the jump.

The Scene: our lucky 13 picks from the second night of LG Fashion Week

Mouth agape (photo: Stefania Yarhi)

Due to the incessant need of the city’s most fashionable to wear all shades of black, Toronto’s style can be kind of boring. We found some black-clad fashion folks on the second night of fashion week, but we also managed to snag some shots of colour. Find out who made it onto our list and who was an accessory to a fashion crime in the gallery below.

The Bay vs. Holts: the Bay’s scheme to steal the fashion crown from Holts

The sensible shoes and twin–sets are gone, replaced by stilettos and crystal-encrusted gowns. There’s valet parking and personal shoppers, and they’re serving champagne up on three. It’s all part of the Bay’s scheme to win the loyalty of society shopaholics—and steal the fashion crown from Holts

(Image: George Pimentel)

One evening last March, Toronto’s stylish set put on their best frocks and headed to a retail baptism. Sarah Jessica Parker, celebrity high priestess of fashion, was in town to launch the Halston Heritage label at The Bay. The party, which reportedly cost over $200,000, was meant to establish Canada’s oldest department store as a major player in high-end womenswear. If retailers can be born again, this was The Bay’s moment to lean back and dip its head into the holy water.

Fashion media and socialites were ushered into the Queen Street flagship store and up the escalator to sip champagne on the third floor. That’s where The Room is located. The upscale designer dress salon was renovated a year ago for approximately $4.4 million in a high modernist style by the designers Yabu Pushelberg. The result is a treasure trove of conversation piece baubles, heels, flirty cocktail dresses and gowns by some of the most prestigious designers in the business. It’s the beating heart of the new Bay.

The Good Neighbours party: where guests used porta-potties

Speedman at the Good Neighbours premiere, where guests did not use porta-potties (Image: Jag Gundu/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images)

Having been proven wrong last week about the awesomeness of parties held in parkades, we jumped on the invite to ET Canada’s party for TIFF film Good Neighbours, located on the roof of a Yorkville garage. But unlike at Absolut’s event, the golf carts at this shindig weren’t for riding. Our inner teenage girl tittered at the possibility of seeing star Scott Speedman (at the risk of dating ourselves, we’ve loved him since Felicity), but instead we ran into such locals as Cheryl Hickey, Ainsley Kerr and Peter Fallico, along with drunken industry types galore. Our favourite moment of the night came when we exited the porta-potty (such a classy way to pee) and bumped Jill Hennessy on the butt with the door. Ever the Canadian, she, of course, apologized to us.

Promoting Guess and Budweiser, how one Toronto socialite makes her money

Bud Light Lime, that love-to-hate beer seen at many a party, has just gotten a little classier(?) with socialite Ainsley Kerr signing on to promote the suds. As an ambassador for the brand, Kerr, a mainstay at every Toronto event with a guest list, will talk about the ins and outs of planning a sophisticated summer soiree, including “ambiance,” the transition from “chic to casual,” “palette etiquette” (whatever that means) and at the centre of it all, Bud Light Lime as a cocktail of choice. Where she’ll be doing this, we’re not sure.

Lucian Matis takes it to the max with his fall collection

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Lucian Matis consistently puts out one of the most interesting collections of fashion week, but despite being a finalist on the first season of Project Runway Canada, his show on Thursday was quiet. There were a few notable guests—model Stacey McKenzie, who was a regular sight at the Allstream Centre, Ainsley Kerr and Monika Schnarre—but the crowd was nothing compared to the Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style shows the night before. The clothes were maximalist, with ballooning shoulders and hips, intricate beading, busy patterns and lace. The collection was a feast for the eyes; too bad more eyes weren’t there to see it.

Toronto fashion week begins with the fur-heavy Izma show

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Toronto’s official LG Fashion Week began last night at the Allstream Centre on the CNE grounds. Despite the rain and Sunday evening start time, Suzanne Rogers, Ainsley Kerr, Jeremy Laing, Joe and Kimberley Newport-Mimran et al. showed up to see the first collection from Izma—a fur-focused line from designer Izzy Camilleri (who famously designed a fox coat for Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada) and Adrian Mainella, former host of Fashion File.

These furs aren’t the kind of pieces Cruella DeVil would covet. The pelts are from the North American Fur Association, a group that uses the furs of non-endangered species acquired from licensed trappers, who use a quota system to assist with wildlife control. The runway looks presented every imaginable use of fur—messenger bags, capes, shawls, skirts, sweaters, and a sheer dress with fur floret details. We were struck by the lightness of the material as it billowed with the models’ strides down the catwalk.

Judging by the Canadian Filmmakers Party, this is going to be a fun film festival

Last night, The Spoke Club held one of the official TIFF kickoff events—the annual Canadian Filmmakers Party—and it set a wonderful tone for the festival-to-come. Our inner nerd was hyperventilating and grasping for his inhaler at seeing Canadian Battlestar Galactica alums Aaron Douglas and Grace Park. Other guests included Eric McCormack, of Will and Grace fame, Jian Ghomeshi, Stephen Wong (from Project Runway Canada), Ainsley Kerr (of course), and Dan Woods (who we fondly remember as Degrassi’s irascible but lovable principal).
