Sunny Fong debuts Vawk and Vawkkin fall/winter 2012 at Toronto Fashion Week

Sunny Fong is long past his Project Runway Canada days—his line Vawk has been around since 2004—so it’s nice to see him branch out with a new collection. He premiered his new line, Vawkkin, along with Vawk at a runway show yesterday afternoon at Toronto Fashion Week. Stacey McKenzie kept it casual (well, for her) in a black sequined blazer and faded jeans, while singer Kreesha Turner (who, like McKenzie, has been a big Toronto fashion cheerleader this season) scurried straight to her front-row seat. Check out our review of both collections

Sunny Fong showed two collections yesterday afternoon: Vawk and Vawkkin. While Vawk didn’t really fulfill Fong’s “sci-fi samurai” theme, we did love his aubergine silk gown and the finale gown. As for his new baby, Vawkkin, it was a smart collection of business-appropriate garb for a generation of career women above age 40. Check out both of Sunny Fong’s collections

Line’s cozy and warm fall/winter 2012 collection leaves us wishing it was still cold outside

Line fall/winter 2012 (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

John Muscat and Jennifer Wells showed their Line knitwear collection yesterday afternoon to a room that included guests like Jeanne Beker, woman-about-town Biko Beauttah and Jaclyn Genovese. Though 29 looks were perhaps too many (how many sweaters can one person look at?), the knit toppers looked cozy and snuggly. Muscat and Wells played with proportion, in oversized knits and capes, and pattern, using Fair Isle and abstract designs they called “reminiscent of rustic terrains.” The skilled knit work was visible in tops primarily, but skirts got the same treatment—the abstract designs melded maroon into grey and black. Our favourites were the wrapped cape in blue, soft purple and grey, a mod black and white zigzag sweater-dress with leather sleeves (like a more affordable version of Missoni) and a heather-grey wrapped tunic. Though we don’t want to even contemplate thinking about cold weather for another six months, if we have to, these cuddly sweaters are a sight cuter than a Slanket. Joe Fresh knocks it out of the park for ladies with his fall/winter 2012 collection, but what about the fellas?

W. Bruce C. Bailey worships at the church of Joe Freezy (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

It was a strange scene at last night’s Joe Fresh show. Not only was there no gargantuan lineup to get into the runway room, but all operations ran smoothly without a hitch (none that we could see, anyway—the show was more or less on time). Guests piled in, including Catherine and David Nugent, Joe Mimran’s wife and Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran, Holt Renfrew’s Moira Wright and Jennifer Daubney, king and queen of the Loblaw throne Alexandra Weston and Galen Weston Jr., CBC’s Kristine Stewart, Dragons’ Den’s Arlene Dickinson, philanthropist W. Bruce C. Bailey (who enthusiastically got down on one knee to offer Mimran a single orange flower during his finale walk), society columnist Shinan Govani, designer Evan Biddell (who returned to Toronto last night after over a year in Vancouver—he’s taking over Wayne Clark’s old studio), PR bigwigs Suzanne Cohon and Susan Chong, MTV host Aliya-Jasmine Sovani, plastic surgeon to the society stars Dr. Trevor Born and more. Needless to say, people with a little bit of cash and people with a lot come for Joe Freezy, and we’re happy to report that the show went ahead without any major sartorial misses—but there were some minor ones.

Joe Fresh may have skimped on the menswear this season, but he brought women joy in the form of prints, beautiful knits, houndstooth dresses and skirts, glossy leathers and felt wool jackets. Check out Joe Fresh’s fall/winter 2012 collection »

Martin Lim proves its worthiness to Mercedes-Benz and the crowd at Toronto Fashion Week

The sun was still shining during the Martin Lim show yesterday evening, but the heart-stopping bass inside the tent made us feel like we were several hours into a night of party hopping. Still, the beats didn’t deter model Stacey Mckenzie, front-row regular Suzanne Boyd, Real Housewife of Vancouver Mary Zilba and In Fashion’s Glen Baxter from sticking around to see the latest collection from the duo who won last year’s Mercedes-Benz Start-up Program. From a jaunty ’60s-tinged intro video to a couple of breathtaking evening gowns, designers Danielle Martin and Pao Lim offered more evidence that they deserved the win. Martin Lim returned with its signature piped silk strips, which we’re convinced it could do without. But apart from the old-hat gimmick, we loved the show’s segment of evening gowns and jackets, and we think Martin Lim proved it was worthy of winning Mercedes-Benz’s start-up competition last season. Toronto Fashion Week trends: male and female pattern boldness

Okay Canadian Catwalk kids, here’s what we saw on day two of Toronto Fashion Week: a tablecloth dress that’s begging to be eaten off of; a windowpane check that just evokes images of jumping out a window because a seatmate won’t stop talking; and several women’s garments that would make any florist envious. Who knew a pattern could be such a statement piece? Well, these cats did, and good on them for trying something—like, um, looking like a Las Vegas performer who resembles either a bird or a butterfly. The Scene: Adrian Wu tries too hard, and Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran coordinate outfits

It’s been a while, but The Scene is back, and today we’re looking at people who schlepped to the tents on the first two days of Toronto Fashion Week. We saw kooky accessories on designer Adrian Wu (naturally), pointy tangerine heels on Mrs. Joe Freezy’s feet and model Stacy McKenzie hamming it up (again, naturally). Did you get spotted in the sea of fashionable people? Find out in our gallery of The Scene »

Chloé Comme Parris takes us to the ’70s for fall/winter 2012, and a model takes her shoes off on the runway

Chloé Comme Parris (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Sister design team Chloe and Parris Gordon had their third at-bat yesterday with their line Chloé Comme Parris. This was their most packed show yet, filling almost all the seats in the cavernous runway room with guests like model Stacey McKenzie (in her most casual royal purple blazer and booty shorts), nail polish impresario Essie Weingarten and PR queen Natasha Koifman. When one model had problems walking in her teetering stilettos, she simply doffed them (to huge applause from the audience), though McKenzie, typically one for loud outbursts from her seat to models she adores, kept relatively silent. The Lou Reed soundtrack was spot-on for the collection—the clothes were like a sexy, less heroin-induced iteration of 1970s New York rock ’n’ roll. Sid Neigum dresses Tara Gill for his fall/winter 2012 show at Toronto Fashion Week

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Sid Neigum showed his collection in the sunny studio space at the Toronto Fashion Week tents yesterday afternoon, with guests that included fellow designers Ashley Rowe and Amanda Lew Kee (sporting a neon yellow Cambridge satchel), hair stylist and fashionable gent Tony Pham and shopgirl Jaclyn Genovese. The room was well lit, but not so bright that it required sunglasses—we spotted at least five guests (including Robin Kay) wearing theirs indoors. Neigum’s look is fairly typical of what you might expect to see on a dude (or woman) in Berlin or the Lower East Side: asymmetric zippers, long tunics and slim-fitting leather jackets. Check out our review of the show »

Sig Neigum presented another array of black outfits this season in a show that included beautiful jackets, Tara Gill in men’s clothing and a pair of drop-crotch pants (that we didn’t care for).

Pavoni brings “couture” glamour and old Hollywood fierceness to Toronto Fashion Week

Toronto Fashion Week’s night one closing show was Pavoni, a self-described “couture” clothing line out of Montreal. Following the socialite-packed Holt Renfrew show, most of the big-name divas had packed it in, but we did spot CityLine’s Sanda Pittana, Vanessa Mulroney and makeup artist and hair stylist Rob Weir (he’s worked with confirmed ice queen Anna Wintour) on the front row. Our take on this series of embellished gowns after the jump.
