First you publish a ridiculous article in your July edition about how the rich have been “affected” by this recession (“One well-heeled Rosedale woman…recently found herself haggling for the first time for a 10 per cent discount on a $3,000 designer dress at Holts.” – um, were we supposed to feel sorry for her???) and now you run a story featuring $410 jeans. What planet are you from where this makes sense?!

Just because you don’t want to spend four hundred bucks for jeans, doesn’t make them any less good or stylish or interesting. Lots of people in this city will happily pay that much for high quality stuff. Besides, 3 or 4 of these selections are under 100 bucks. funny to say, but the cheapest ones here and the most expensive are the two ugliest, in my opinion. The Over the Rainbows are the winners.

What I dont understand is why people have such a hate on for people who can afford them. If they have money, they can spend it as they please. If someone has more money then brains I dont know why some people take it so personally and get their panties in a knot over it.

chimmy: I’m not wearing any panties. Anyway, I don’t have a “hate on” for rich people. I have a “hate on” for rich people who are being thrifty because it’s “trendy”, whereas the majority of the population are being thrifty out of necessity.

Buying jeans,like buying many things, allows the consumer to express not only their personal style but ‘philosophical’ view points. Where are the jeans made?Fair trade? What is the denim fabric made of? Is it organic? I could go on for ever…To me buying the right jeans is like buying great cotton bed linens. I wear my jeans longer uring the day than I sleep in my bed!

But you make a valid point. There are people who are struggling to make ends meet, living paycheck-to-paycheck and we are supposed to feel sorry for someone who shops at Holts? Please. I’ve spoken with other who agree that Toronto Life only represents a small percentage of wealthy and powerful Torontonians. My friends and I rarely relate to anything they print, which is unfortunate. I’d love to find a publication that keeps me connected to issues that reflect Toronto as a whole.
I do appreciate and purchase quality items (I have one pair of jeans, $200 Seven that I wear all the time – great investment). I encourage everyone to buy less but invest in quality, classic items that can be used for a long time. It’s better for the environment and you’ll end up spending less in the long run. Whatever you buy and how much you spend is your business. It is sad though, to see the increasing divide between the have and the have-nots. Our economy is a bit out of whack, and stories that feature fashion at the price some people pay for their rent seems a bit excessive.
July 16, 2009 at 1:11 pm | by cutieslugi think its very hard to determine which jean is the best. every body is so different that if one skinny fits doesnt mean that its going to fit the next body. if you ask 100 people about their fav jean im sure youd have about 50 different names. its not price that counts, but denim, fit and wash. denim never was worth $400.00 so why is it surprising so many people now? did it have to take excessive ridiculous spending for people to get this?? who was ever impressed with someone wearing the number 7 on the butt? not me…………..

How about a selection of fantastic denim for under $70?? If you really want to flex your fashion muscles, how about searching for excellent fitting jeans on a budget? Now there’s a story.
