Just Opened: Junction shopping gets even better with Metropolis Living
The place: Adding to the Junction’s growing rep as a design destination, this furniture and decor shop lives up to its tag line: “Industrial revolution…reinvented.” Owned by siblings and veteran vintage collectors Phil Freire and Maggie Gattesco, Metropolis Living—styled like a museum of props from a retro film set—pulls together refurbished housewares and untouched originals.
The stuff: Glassware—chemist bottles ($25–$95), large apothecary jars ($125)—is in impeccable condition, and metal-mesh locker baskets ($55) make for interesting storage of household bits and bobs. Typography nerds will lust after the original metal transit signs from New York and Chicago covering the walls, and industrial design buffs will appreciate Freire’s own meticulously refurbished pieces, such as a tabletop crafted from bowling alley floorboards ($2,895).
The customer: Soft-loft residents looking to up their home’s industrial cred.
Our favourite thing: An imposing glass-topped desk ($4,500), which has a base made of a painstakingly restored web of metal gears from a textile mill.

I just checked out Metropolis Living and I was blown away. This store is gorgeous and the merchandise is extremely well chosen and displayed. I’ve been going into vintage industrial stores on my travels for quite awhile and this is the most interesting store I’ve ever found – right here in TO. I almost don’t want anyone else to know about it, but I want it to succeed because I need it to be there. There were so many great items that I was almost overwhelmed. Fantastic vintage wire chairs and metal stools. A trolley/cart with magnificent patina. An outstanding desk with a glass top over old, cleanup industrial gears serving as the base. An antique dressmaker’s form with a bustle from the beginning of the 1900s. This store is awesome and will be a frequent destination for me. I was excited by Restoration Hardware’s new industrial line, but that is mass produced. This store’s stuff is unique and just beautiful.
Been there and very much impress about their products, i like industrial vintage and modern combine together, and this shop is all about it. cant wait their website work and probably have some online shopping. Love it!!
WOW… Just wow! Walking into metropolis is like a scene from charlie and the chocolate factory. Everything in the store is so terrific. The vintage safety deposit boxes to the bowling ally table screamed “buy me”. I wanted every item I looked at. Phil was vary pleasant and my first visit will definitely not be my last. I just hope some of my favorite items are still there.
