Luxury goods consumers are selfish, DSquared2 designing opening ceremony costumes, Bloomingdale’s in Dubai

The same-sex marriage tee that Urban Outfitters took off shelves

• Beautiful things happen when fashion and athletics collide, and we’re not talking about Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen’s baby. Designers Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2 have designed, in honour of the Olympics, a $350 maple leaf–logo fleece hoodie to be sold at Holt Renfrew. The twins are also designing the costumes for the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, which means plenty of sexy lumberjacks and brooding hockey players. [WWD]

A study from Harvard Business School says luxury goods consumers are more likely to make inconsiderate, selfish decisions that harm others. The findings are detailed in an HBS paper called “The Devil Wears Prada? Effects of Exposure to Luxury Goods on Cognition and Decision Making.” It seems money can’t buy love or a conscience. [Harvard Business School]

• Bloomingdale’s has opened its first location outside the U.S. Unfortunately, the flashy 200,000-square-foot store is in Dubai, which was booming three years ago when the plan was hatched. The company is hopeful about the store’s outlook, but we worry that the Magnolia Bakery cupcakes that have been specially made for outpost will go uneaten without busloads of starry-eyed Sex and the City tour-goers to buy them. [The National]

• Urban Outfitters found itself in a pickle last weekend when Jezebel noticed a shirt on the hipster clothier’s Web site available in colours white/charcoal and Obama/black. A rep apologized and said it was an error due to a database truncation issue and was not a political statement. Much like when the company pulled “I support same-sex marriage” tees from its shelves, this incident won’t help keep founder Richard Hayne’s right-leaning tendencies quiet. [Jezebel]

From now on, every time you see a celebrity sitting at a fashion show, imagine a price tag imprinted on their forehead. Fashionista has made educated guesses on how much it costs to have the A- to D- list warm the front-row seats. Shockingly, Rihanna could fetch over $100,000, but even more surprising is that Jared Leto can score $25,000. [Fashionista]

  1. If you rationalize it, it only costs approximately $35 each time you wear the sweater during the Olympics.
