Introducing: Miranda Purves, Flare magazine’s new editor-in-chief
It was a bit of a shock to see Flare’s Lisa Tant move to the role of publisher of Hello! Canada—we assumed she’d get a slap on the wrist for leaking embargoed information, not a promotion. Now Miranda Purves, a former fashion editor at Elle, has stepped in, and many are wondering who she is. Turns out Purves is more of a name than we thought, having made waves in 2008 for an article she wrote for Elle’s “Make Better” issue. For the story, Purves asked a GQ editor and a host of male “consultants” for help on how to feel sexy, because she’s all too aware of what she refers to as her “figure flaws”: cellulite, short legs, big feet, too-long hips and breasts too far apart. She finishes the piece by summing up what she learned: “I believe a little bit more that you can fake sexiness, but I also think that if it doesn’t come naturally, you shouldn’t bother.” So, if you don’t view yourself as traditionally sexy, no one ever will, and you should give up? This message and more coming soon to a newsstand near you.
Missing Lisa Tant already. This woman is such a terrible hire. Has Ken Whyte read her infamous Ring of Fire piece about vaginal tearing? If so, he has a sick sense of humor.
I don’t see how Whyte has a sick sense of humour if he likes Purves’ Ring of Fire piece. It is a truthful and courageous account of what happens to many women in childbirth and the legacy of that trauma in the months afterward. If it had happened to you, you wouldn’t think it was sick.
first job – pull the pub out of the 80’s… only canadians are satisfied with the 80’s. oops, its a canadian rag.
Is Purves a “fashion editor”? Thought she was a features editor/writer.
Maybe now with all this extra time to spare and stress free new job, Lisa’s eyebrows will come back down to their original location on her forehead!
First of all, that’s not a promotion. That isn’t just a slap on the wrist, that’s a smack in the face. It would have cost them way more to fire her. Second, Purves is a no one in the US. Why Rogers wouldn’t have sourced internally from some of the awesome talent they have already is beyond comprehension. But then again, it’s Rogers.
Peachy, are you kidding me, I’ve subscribed to Flare since the 90s and it has only gotten better.
Agreed on Purves no-one status down south. Flare is internationally recognized and deserves much better than a no-style nobody at the helm. She is a frumpy, obnoxious writer, not a fashion editor. Never will be.
Mono, fire her? For what – leaking details about a perfume ultimately nobody cares about? Assuming anyone outside of Canada’s fashion circle even reads her tweets, you can’t buy publicity like that. Perfume advertiser would be thrilled not peeved.
Rogers moves very slowly. Her promotion was likely in the works for weeks before that tweet. Wouldn’t have made a difference.
I’m a little surprised to see these “nobody” comments. Why the negativity? From the stuff I’ve seen in Elle, Mrs. Purves is very fashion forward and she has certainly been very bold about approaching some difficult subjects in women’s lives. Sounds like Flare is trying to push the envelope a bit and I look forward to the new direction she takes the magazine.
Agree with @Fashionista – I don’t get the hate here. Ms. Purves’s writing (not only the much-publicized pieces mentioned above) is consistently smart and funny…plus her Elle columns were entertaining and definitely chic/fashion aware. Flare’s been boring for years…it will be great to see someone new step in to take it in a new (hopefully interesting and truly fashion-forward) direction.
These critical comments are all based in the standard misogyny women get when they do anything powerful at all. How about give Purves a chance to do some new work in what is, obviously, one of the most critical and weirdest industries for self-aware women to work in?
There’s no need to speculate anymore. It’s September and Purves’s first hideously overwritten editorial has been published; she’s appeared on Citytv with a “review” of TIFF fashion that no doubt made her own family squirm; and she’s crapped upon many a staffer and freelancer. She’s doing a great job of ruining her rep all by herself. Good luck, Flare.
hello everyone…i would like to send an e mail to miranda …any idea how to go about ? thank you
