Supermodel Linda Evangelista has been fighting for a $46,000-a-month child support settlement for a while now, and as of yesterday, it appears she’s still in it to win it. According to the New York Daily News, Evangelista showed up to the fight of her life at the Manhattan Family Court on Thursday in beige heels, a black pleated skirt, a floral blouse, an expensive gold watch and sunglasses. Almost immediately, the mudslinging began. Evangelista’s attorney William Beslow alleged that her billionaire ex Francois-Henri Pinault requested that she get an abortion as soon as she sprung the news that she was pregnant with their child. Pinault responded to the allegations on the stand, saying that he played no part in the decision to have the child, but told Evangelista that he’d “recognize the baby.” (It seemed like a fairly obvious point to us—if he’s taking part in the carnal act, of course he should recognize the child.) No settlement has been reached, but Evangelista is gunning for $552,000 a year, which includes $90,000 for one full-time and one part-time nanny and $175,000 for a bodyguard and driver. We guess she wasn’t kidding when she said she wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.

The Globe and Mail recently reported that the Hudson’s Bay Company is currently talking with Bloomingdale’s to open a “store within a store” at its Bloor Street location. Sources suggest that this is a pre-emptive strike from HBC CEO Richard Baker, who is attempting to capture a large chunk of the high-end fashion retail market before foreign players like Nordstrom arrive (it is rumoured that Nordstrom has been scouting real estate). Sources speculate that HBC is contemplating stores in Vancouver and Calgary as well, and this move could happen as early as the fall. Read the entire store [Globe and Mail] »
QUOTED: Jeanne Beker remembers the Incredible Hulk (and proves she doesn’t understand major league sports)
It’s a great colour combo. It certainly tells little boys the Hulk is alive and well.
—Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker remarks on the “jazziness” of the lime green in Seattle’s new NFL uniform. We’re actually not sure what she’s trying to say. She probably doesn’t either (sports!). Oh, Jeanne. [Toronto Star]
David Beckham is coming to town to play soccer, but what will he wear?

It’s a fairly mild winter Wednesday, so for us to imagine David Beckham showing up to his match against Toronto FC this evening in a pair of his flattering H&M skivvies may not be too much to hope for. Indeed, when it comes to Beckham’s Toronto appearances, fans seem more into what he’s wearing than his performance on the field—his last trip garnered reports of him shopping in Kensington Market for a vintage Iron Maiden T-shirt and sitting on the sidelines with an injury in a well-fitted suit. Seeing as he’s fit to play this time around, there’s a good chance he’ll put on his jersey—but we’re pretty sure the cheering would be louder if Toronto FC played shirts and Beckham played skin.

Dealuxe owner Joanna Track poaches another employee from the Fashion masthead: Susie Sheffman

Earlier last week, Joanna Track—former owner of Sweetspot and current owner of e-tailer Dealuxe—announced that Fashion magazine’s market editor, Jordan Porter, had joined the Dealuxe team. Today, a similar announcement was made: Fashion magazine’s fashion director, Susie Sheffman, will be taking the same title at Dealuxe. We spoke to Sheffman, who said she always thought she’d be carried out of Fashion in a pine box, but a fabulous opportunity came a knockin’. We presume that means more money and fewer restraints, which is why most people change jobs, but we’re wondering who at Fashion might be next to drink the Dealuxe Kool-Aid. Or has Track moved on to Flare?

Joe Freezy (also known as Joe Fresh) is going to Miami to throw a party
No, Joe Mimran isn’t living out a Will Smith video as part of his bucket list, but he is heading to Miami (where “hot mommies scream ay Papi”) to throw a party at Art Basel. In tandem with The Warhol’s Eric Shiner and Sara Tecchia, Freezy himself will be toasting the arts with a performance from Holly Woodlawn, a nearly 80-year-old drag queen and former Andy Warhol–made superstar. Could this mean that Papa Joe’s empire is expanding even more?
Flare magazine wasn’t the only Canadian pub at New York Fashion Week, despite tweets to the contrary
Toronto has three major Canadian fashion publications—Fashion, Flare and Elle Canada—and, as in any good sector, the goal is always to be number one. Yesterday, the fight for the top spot seemed to have been clearly won by Flare, with fashion director Liz Cabral tweeting from Proenza Schouler’s show at New York Fashion Week, “will be the only Cdn magazine at tonights Proenza Schouler show. No reception @ the venue, look for tweets right after! #nyfw.” We found this particularly surprising, considering Fashion magazine’s beauty director, Lesa Hannah, was a Canadian fashion journalist given access to report on beauty for the Schouler show backstage—which means at least two of the three Canadian fashion bibles were in house. Cabral showed no regret for her hubris, considering her many tweets were left public for the rest of the night, but this morning, without an apology or correction, all whispers of Flare’s access had been deleted.

Lady Gaga sparks rumour that she’ll take a one-year trainwreck hiatus to become, uh, a fashion designer
The Council of Fashion Designers of America recently named Lady Gaga “Fashion Icon of the Year,” which has apparently given her an ego: at the recent MMVAs in Toronto, she told fans that in the near future, she hopes to start her own fashion line (because she’s “friends with a lot of designers”). But we’re not sure Gaga can afford the endeavour, since the pop singer recently claimed she went bankrupt from the excess she displays on stage.
Unless she creates a capsule collection with Target or H&M, we’re not sure anyone could afford the fame monster lifestyle (just thinking about a rotating meat wardrobe makes us cringe at the dry cleaning costs). Plus, she’ll clearly need a lot of help—as much as she’d like to believe she’s responsible for how she looks, she’ll definitely need her hype circle, better known as the Haus of Gaga, under her wing (which, we imagine, doesn’t come cheap). But that’s okay—apparently knowing Donatella Versace instantly makes someone a couturier.

Industry insider dishes on non-L’Oréal product scandal at LG Fashion Week
Read the rest of this entry »
There were some sore toes and bruised egos backstage at LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oréal Paris last month, and not because models had to walk the runway in small shoes. Rather than work directly with the artists provided by sponsor L’Oréal Paris, a coterie of labels—we hear Pink Tartan and Line were among them—quietly brought in their own makeup experts to provide their brand’s beauty direction and supervise its execution. When a non-sanctioned manicurist was spotted working on a model’s nails, a Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC) representative reportedly insisted, “Everything that touches the skin must be L’Oréal.” Really? We’re pretty sure blue lipstick does not fall into the beauty brand’s extensive repertoire.
Women’s Wear Daily sort of applauds Toronto fashion
Torontonians can be down on themselves—self-deprecation becomes a habit when you’re the centre of the universe. But pockets of the city roared with excitement this afternoon because a New York-based publication, Women’s Wear Daily, stamped our fair city with its seal of approval: an LG Fashion Week mention.
Yes, it is exciting to see Anita Clarke, Tiyana Grulovic, Odessa Paloma Parker and more in an international publication, but with the subjects left unnamed and a pretty thin description of Toronto fashion, we wonder why Torontonians are so quick to go gaga for a magazine that barely knows we exist. We’ll savour the moment, though, much like everyone else.
Miss J. finds Toronto’s next top runway model

Ciara Hunt's winning walk (Image: Karon Liu)
“Would our first model please come out?” cooed Miss J., the statuesque America’s Next Top Model runway coach, in the Bloor Street Holt Renfrew this weekend for a “celebrity walk-off” slash promotion for his new book, Follow the Model.
Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese was first up. “Girl, I think if the shoe fits, wear it,” critiques Miss J. “If the shoe is a little too small, sweetie, you have to make it work.” Pugliese took off her stilettos for her second attempt. “I’ll have to take off a point ’cause she took off her shoe,” he told the panel of judges: gossip king Shinan Govani, MTV sweetheart Jessi Cruickshank and Canada’s answer to Tim Gunn, model agent Elmer Olsen.

Jeanne Beker wears Hudson’s Bay coat to Paris fashion week
Last week, we wondered whether the Hudson’s Bay Company would be able to maintain its buzzy status post–Olympic Games. Well, this should help. Fashion magazine has snapped a photo of a svelte-looking Jeanne Beker in Paris wearing a brightly striped HBC blanket coat, which she was also rumoured to be sporting in Vancouver. This weekend, Beker wore the coat while on her way to the Viktor and Rolf show. Designed by Smythe for The Bay, the coat has also been spotted on Rachel Bilson. Beker tweeted, “My Hudson Bay blanket coat is getting raves! All kinds of photogs are taking my pic…” followed by, “Great to see blatant Canadian fashion turning heads at the Tuileries.” Publicity doesn’t get much better than an internationally respected style icon wrapped in your company’s logo.

Tavi Gevinson’s gig on Fashion Television: less chat, more hat

Mad hatter Tavi Gevinson
When we first wrote about Tavi Gevinson’s reporting gig for Fashion Television—the pint-sized teen blogger was hired to cover a few runway shows in New York while Jeanne Beker headed to the Olympics—we still hadn’t seen the footage. A short clip of Gevinson’s stint is now on the FT Web site. In it, she walks from show to show, air-kisses friends and poses for photographers. Her personal style is the main draw, with blue-grey hair accessorized with a turban or flower-shaped hat. (We can’t decide whether she looks like she dresses from the Tickle Trunk or like a 60-year-old cat lady.) We see her chatting with model Coco Rocha, designer Jeremy Scott and fellow blogger Bryan Boy, but she doesn’t actually interview anyone. Instead, she’s the subject of the brief segment.
