Life of glamour and cinema dashes Nadia Litz’s dream of being a magazine editor

Nadia Litz, who won our Cutest Girl on a Bike Award a couple of years ago for her role in Monkey Warfare, flattered us during an accidental meet at Sweaty Betty’s Friday night by admitting her dream job is to be a writer for Toronto Life. Although we thought her backup plan was a career in law, we’ll take this compliment and pretend it wasn’t just one of those things people say after a lot of free drinks.

Bruce McDonald is cowboy cool as the editing of Pontypool enters the 11th hour

Last night at Milli’s boutique in Yorkville, we caught up with Canadian director Bruce McDonald (Highway 61, Hard Core Logo). He arrived fashionably late to his own party due to the down-to-the-wire editing of his film Pontypool, which has its international debut Saturday night at TIFF. Bombarded by guests, and with daughter Charlie jumping up to steal his cowboy hat, McDonald says with absolute calmness, “The final sound mix will be down to the hour…right to the fucking wall.” Although most filmmakers would have a series of panic attacks if found in this situation, Toronto’s eccentric cinema maverick remarks, “It’s exciting. Typically there is a screening for the cast and crew first, but for us, it’s boom—show it to the world! We are very jazzed.”

Degrassi cast works together and plays together

Spotted outside The Windsor Arms today was the Degrassi squad: Adamo Ruggiero, Nina Dobrev and a couple of buds fresh from the IT Lounge on the second floor. They are tiny people, all of them, and make us feel old (but not as old as we feel next to Degrassi alum Shenae Grimes—the new 90210 vixen was born when we were well into grade school).

Angelina Jolie’s life is more interesting than yours

Sniffing for some dirt on the celebs, we asked celebrity stylist Sandra Graham which of the many divas she’s worked with was the biggest nightmare. Instead we were met with absolute praise for, who else, Angelina Jolie. “She’s just so nice, no temper tantrums. She wears Nicole Miller not Christian Dior..you know? Very low key. I just loved working with her!” Unpretentious, drop dead gorgeous, caregiver to the world, bangin’ Brad; it’s almost angering how perfect Ms. Jolie is. Sigh.—Jen McNeely

Actually, Passchendaele is pretty good

Rolling out the red carpet Thursday evening is Paul Gross’s Passchendaele, a sincere attempt at box-office success with the unofficial tagline “It was really expensive!” But fear not, traditional Canadian cinema lovers; this film hasn’t completely outgrown its Weird Sex and Snowshoes roots.

Muscles from Brussels throws down in Hogtown

If your father is an eastern European immigrant who hasn’t stayed awake through an entire movie since 1991’s Stone Cold (also known to its publicists as the greatest action movie of all time), name-dropping celebrities he’ll recognize can be pretty difficult. When we bragged at the dinner table about who is coming to the festival, the reaction was essentially, “Brad Pitt who?” Thankfully, Jean-Claude Van Damme returns from obscurity to save the day.
