Why we want Anne Hathaway to be our friend: An interview with the cast of Rachel Getting Married

We thought Anne Hathaway peaked as a princess—and we were wrong. We assumed Debra Winger’s success on film ended in the mid-’80s—strike two. We knew Rosemary DeWitt only as the bohemian lover of Don Draper in Mad Men—now we know better. Jenny Lumet had never written a screenplay, but took some time off from teaching Grade 8 English to hammer out Rachel Getting Married and then somehow nailed down Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) to direct her debut. Certainly it helped that her father, Sidney Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon), handed the project to Demme, but we still applaud her and this cast of unlikelies for making a film that is already garnering Oscar buzz. Highlights (including Hathaway using the F-word) from the media roundtable with Winger, Demme and Hathaway, after the jump.

TIFF bourgeoisie mistakes itself for social activists at Patti Smith concert at the Gardiner

Patti Smith hushed the crowd at the Gardiner Museum last night (well, minus the 10 per cent who were just there to get friendly with the free booze), and we were brought back to the era of punk, safety pins and pogo dancing. Having arrived from Moscow just yesterday, Smith was seriously jet-lagged (see top photo, left) yet still showed her quick and contagious wit. She apologized for having a guitar strap from the Berlin Film Festival, but said it was only because BFF had given her one and TIFF had not (I guess they really are a BFF). Photogs were standing in the corner of the great room, going nuts trying to capture images of the legend. Following her first song, she turned to them and remarked, “I think you are almost done taking pictures, because at this point Robert Mapplethorpe had taken Horses.” (To the uninformed: Horses is the famous Patti Smith album where she appears unimpressed, wearing suspenders, which happens to be the current fashion rage at this very moment.) After the jump, Patti lets loose on Joan Baez, while Robin Kay and Joe “Fresh” Mimran are spotted.

Spotted last night: Tim Robbins, Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke and Emily Haines

The triple threat of Tim Robbins, Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke shared a booth at Ultra last night for the What Doesn’t Kill You party. The booze was flowing, the women were giddy, and at one point, we thought, Scandal! Ruffalo kissed another woman! But it turned out that it was, in fact, his lovely, bespectacled wife. Later in the night, we tried to ask Hawke how his night was going, but he chose to respectfully ignore us. That’s fine, Ethan. We’ll try again in 2013 when Boyhood finally comes out.

Hoffman, Kaufman and Keener drink up at The Drake

Although the Park Hyatt rooftop is a “secret” retreat for A-listers, they have, apparently, been flocking west for late-night revelry. Seen last night at the Drake Hotel were Charlie Kaufman, Catherine Keener and Philip Seymour Hoffman—no doubt a more civilized meeting of the minds than the hussies who wailed at Paris Hilton down the street at Ultra Supper Club. Maybe Paris’s hair smells better, but we want to pick the minds of Hoffman and Kaufman forever.—Jen McNeely

Ultra Supper Club may welcome Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke and Amanda Peet this Wednesday

Mark Ruffalo was spotted checking into the Park Hyatt at about 8:45 Thursday night. He was as short and soulfully handsome as expected. Ruffalo is at TIFF for three movies: Blindness, The Brothers Bloom and What Doesn’t Kill You—in the latter, he co-stars with Ethan Hawke as “two part-time bad guys trying to negotiate petty gigs.” The after party for What Doesn’t Kill You is on Wednesday at Ultra Supper Club. Hawke’s attendance is confirmed, and we hear that Ruffalo just might follow. Amanda Peet, their blue-eyed, still-so-hot-at-36 bombshell co-star, is also rumoured to be on the VIP guest list. —Melita Kuburas

A peek inside Kate Hudson’s swag bag

Though we can’t imagine Kate Hudson getting as excited for swag as Michael Scott did when he went to the office supplies convention in The Office, perhaps her son, four-year-old Ryder, will be. Baby fever headlines have allowed family wholesomeness to infiltrate even the swanky Tastemakers Lounge at the InterContinental (which has outfitted Canadian stars Joris Jarsky and Kristin Booth). For this TIFF, swag givers are keeping guests’ kids in mind when assembling gift baskets. Joe Fresh Style put together outfits for Hudson’s son, Julianne Moore’s kids, all of Brad Pitt’s six (and counting) children, and Guy Ritchie’s brood (Lourdes, Rocco and David).
