Tonight, at the Bloor Cinema, you can catch the Canadian premiere of Contested Streets: Breaking New York City Gridlock, French Director Stefan Schaefer’s new doc about the evolution of street life in the Big Apple.
Contested Streets also examines London mayor “Red” Ken Livingstone’s recently-imposed city centre car tolls and playful European public space experiments such as the Paris Plage. To cap off the evening, the event, which is part of the Toronto Public Space Committee’s Streets to Screens film series, will also feature a chat between Mark Gordon of the New York Streets Renaissance Project and Enrique Penalosa, the former mayor of Bogota, Columbia. Penalosa is one of the most radical, public space-conscious mayors in history, a man whose ideas still frame discussions about respecting individual citizens in urban planning.
