Toronto-based figure skater Patrick Chan is all about making Canadians feel warm and fuzzy. First he gave us heartwarming McDonald’s advertisements, and now he’s skating for a cause. The Canadian champion is set to perform at the Oshawa Skating Club’s Ice Show at the GM Centre on Saturday night, his last public appearance before the world championships, scheduled for April 24.
For obvious reasons, the worlds had to be moved from their original location, Tokyo, to Moscow. As such, the reigning ISU Grand Prix champion is donating half of his skating fee to the Canadian Red Cross to help its relief efforts in Japan. The other half is going to a scholarship fund in memory of his late coach Osborne Colson.
Chan has earned silver at the last two world championships, but he’ll be gunning for gold later this month. If there’s such a thing as karma in the magical world of men’s figure skating, it’ll surely be on his side.
