The Rogers affair: woman sues telecommunications company after she’s caught cheating on her husband
Consolidating phone bills with Rogers can save money, but, apparently, it can also un-save a marriage. Just ask Gabrielle Nagy, a Toronto woman who is suing the telecommunication behemoth for “ruining her life.”
It’s a classic story. Girl meets boy other than her husband. Girl gets a cellphone under her maiden name in order to maintain a secret affair with boy. Girl’s world comes crashing down when Rogers incorporates girl’s secret phone bill into the monthly statement sent to girl’s “matrimonial home,” thus exposing her cell-terfuge. Husband leaves girl. Girl sues Rogers.
According to the Star:
When Nagy’s husband opened the Rogers invoice, he saw several hour-long phone calls to a single phone number. “Nobody does business this way, and he’s not stupid,” says Nagy, who is in her 30s.
The statement of claim eloquently explains what happened next: “The husband used the previously private and confidential information that the defendant [Rogers] unilaterally disclosed to the husband to inquire about the people that the plaintiff was telephoning and the nature of such calls.” (To paraphrase Justin Timberlake, Nagy didn’t have to say what she did, because her husband already knew—he found out from him.) With that, the husband packed up and left, leaving her alone with their two children and, likely, an unpaid Rogers bill.
While it’s easy to shake one’s head at the idea of blaming Rogers for the disintegration of a marriage that was obviously highly valued, we can’t help but wonder if this signals a business move by Rogers. Is the company getting into the divorce law business? If so, it may have stumbled upon a great way to drum up customers.

wow that’s a good post

Good on the Toronto Life for having the journalistic balls to not close their blog (as the Globe and Mail spinelessly did) on this story. She is a cheat plain and simple, through and through, and when her world melted down, she still could not take absolute responsibility for her deplorable and very much premeditated actions. Instead she chose to see herself as a “victim” and launch a unsubstantiated lawsuit rather than own up to her transgressions. I hope she loses access to her children as clearly she is not a positive influence. She probably got fired from her job not for nothing other than a total lack of trustworthiness.
OK. Let me preface this by saying that I don’t condone cheating in any way and I find what this woman did to be deplorable. However, I do not think her lawsuit is without merit. Corporations should not be in the business of regulating morality (especially when they themselves have no moral compass to speak of). When Rogers unilaterally decided to combine her bill with her husbands (without her consent), they violated her privacy. Plain and simple.
“Corporations should not be in the business of regulating morality (especially when they themselves have no moral compass to speak of).”
I highly doubt that Rogers was “regulating morality” when they combined their bills. They were probably just being dicks as usual. Rogers is a company that doesn’t actually do what you ask them to do and doesn’t follow through on the committments they make to you regarding billing. They NEED to be held accountable for that! She must make that statement of claim dramatic or it won’t be taken seriously. She has to show damages. If Rogers hadn’t done what they did (without her permission!) the affair would not have been discovered. Plain and simple. (Therefore she cannot claim sole responsibility publicly for the downfall of her marriage–you don’t know what she feels personally)
What you think of what she did is immaterial. They violated her contract! And they do it ALL the time and nobody can do anything about it because there are usually no damages you can show from Rogers’ behaviour aside from extreme frustration on your end of the phone. Every Rogers customer should be backing this woman up right now and cheering her on.
Hahaha! This is straight out of the movie Cruel Intentions 3, when Jason wins his bet with Patrick over who will seduce the married girl first and Jason does the deed while she is talking on her cell phone to her ex and he has to listen.
Who cares if she cheated? Rogers has a responsibility to respect client confidentiality and not disclose her personal line to her husband just as men expect banks not to disclose their personal bank accounts to their wives.
A good marriage is not 100% borg. Maybe she had reasons to seek greener pastures beyond the white picket fence. Men do it all the time. Obviously, the two men decided to let her have a chance for happiness with the new kid on the block and the ex bowed out. Maybe the new kid was a Rogers friend or employee. There seems to be a pattern here.
I hope she wins! Rogers royal F***ED me over, they sold my account information to a credit collections agency because, I just so happen to have the same first name and last name as another client and just so happens we were born on the same day but 2 years apart. They were more than willing to give me this girls address whom lives 2 hours away from me, her drivers licence number, master card information and date of birth. Once I explained to them that we were two different people they tried to tell me to go to the police with her information and charge her for identity theft. After they just told me we had different drivers licences numbers yet she stole my identity? Rogers is so STUPID, I am still dealing with this because this girl hasn’t paid her bill. Rogers told me it was handled, and I would no longer have to worry about it and a notice to stop was sent to the collections agency, but what they forgot to tell me was that no they just sent it to a DIFFERENT collections agency. Considering that I just bought a home, I called my banker to find out if it was affecting my credit score. Thats when I found out my credit had dropped 100 points, now I have to rely on Rogers to send me a letter saying they F***ED up to send tot he credit union to fix my score, if she wins it will look good on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, So she cheated, gets caught and its someone else’s fault. Always the way with cheaters. As the old saying goes “You dance you pay the fiddler.” Here is what cheaters commonly say and what they really mean. (IMHO) Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you and that really means – You wasn’t supposed to find out / I wasn’t supposed to get caught. It isn’t what you think means – Just believe what I tell you, no matter what / Don’t believe your eyes or evidence. I just made a (legitimate?) mistake means – I don’t have a brain, so I don’t know right from wrong / I conveniently and temporarily forgot I was married. Cheaters are the worse kind of mean selfish cowards. Good for Rogers!
