Council votes for LRT on Sheppard Avenue, Rob Ford stalks off to his office to sulk
After months of debate and some memorable hissy fits from Rob Ford, city council has voted 24-19 in favour of an LRT line on Sheppard, officially killing Ford’s dream (and campaign promise) of a subway to Scarborough. After the vote, the mayor didn’t stick around to hear the applause and bravos, instead charging “into his office in a flying wedge of aides,” according to the Globe and Mail’s Marcus Gee (geez, you’d think Ford would be used to embarrassing transit losses by now). We’re sure the mayor won’t be silent for long, though—he vowed during the debate that, win or lose, “this will be a big election issue.” We’re sure we’ll hear all about it during his radio show this week. Again Ford you aren’t listening LRT is within budget and subways are not as we already have a subway to Scarborough and no one wants an extension but you. Taxpayers do not want to fund your personal ego problem of getting things your way no matter the fact that you don’t listen to anyone who voted for you. The fact that you are trying to provatize the library system shows that you have no heart or sense of community trust me next election I am voting you out of office as in Toronto we don’t need a self important egotistical social climber. We need someone who speaks for all of us rich or poor not for the corporate fatcats.
When has this so-called Toronto mayor EVER taken a look at the FACTS when it comes to transit??! The Sheppard subway put in place by Mel Lastman is a completely waste of money, the ridership is so low! And Ford wants to extend that? It’s simple folks–Ford is sparking a suburbs vs. downtown war that only the uninformed, egotistical and self-entitled residents of Scarborough will engage in. We all know that LRTs will cost taxpayers less, and will serve more residents, over a longer stretch of rail. Subways will cost taxpayers MORE (in fact, the provincial gov’t has never committed to helping with the funding, and probably won’t), will serve LESS residents over SHORTER stretch of subway. Before the residents of Scarborough and elsewhere start bitching and complaining over the fact that subways are out of sight, cause less traffic disruptions, and all the other lesser arguments, they should look at the facts and learn that they will only get fucked by subways, not saved.
There has to be something behind his insistence. It never made any sense, yet he just outright disregarded all the data. What is happening?
Why would I care about riding in a streetcar when I can just ride a bus?
Nice – he doesn’t get his way (despite making exactly no effort to give councillors a reason to vote with him) and then stomps his feet and leaves the room, insulting everyone on the way out. This, folks is the guy you voted for to be Mayor. You must be so proud.
Marco, why ride a bus when you can drive your own car? It’s far more comfortable than either the bus or a light rail train. You can drive vroom vroom down the road until you run into a transit vehicle blocking up the city.
