Year in Review: the five best getaways from Cottage of the Week

Whether you’re in the market for a vacation property or not, ogling other people’s places (and judging other people’s decor) is rollicking good fun. That’s why we spend the summer hunting down the most beautiful, most luxurious, most over-the-top cottages for sale and posting full photo tours for anybody stuck in the city. Here, our five favourite cottages from the past 12 months.

5. Hemlock Point Side Road South, Port Sandfield

The place: A sunny estate on the shores of Lake Joseph with a dock and furnished boathouse.
The price: $7,500 a week
Why we love it: The white siding and nautical decor are oh-so preppy, making it easy to imagine perfect family vacations with all-day boat trips and sundowner cocktails on the dock.

4. 28 Magnet Road, Magnetawan

The place: A two-bedroom cabin on a rivere 30 minutes east of Parry Sound.
The price: $1,000 a week
Why we love it: Though it’s the most modest cabin we featured this year, it has a “glamping” tent with a queen-sized bed, bathroom, private deck and fireplace.

3. 1100 Delbrooke Road, Lake of Bays

The place: An over-the-top Canadiana-themed cottage in Muskoka with eight bedrooms, a private beach, a putting green, a hot yoga room and a sauna.
The price: $15 million
Why we love it: Not many homeowners outside of Texas can say they have their own saloon with saddle bar stools, a swinging door and horse decals everywhere.

2. 201 Brophys Lane, Blue Mountains

The place: A  palatial spread in the heart of ski country with an infinity pool and tennis courts for the summer months.
The price: $5 million
Why we love it: The 12-person outdoor hot tub is linked to the house by a heated stone walkway, and there’s a room solely devoted to tuning skis.

1. Old Woman Island, Lake Muskoka

The place: A private island on Lake Muskoka
The price: $13.9 million
Why we love it: Forget roughing it—we like watching our tennis from a couch in a covered pavilion with overhead fans and a full bar.
