ADDRESS: 492 Maple Point Rd., Kagawong
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Manitoulin Island
AGENT: Timothy Fenerty, J. A. Rolston Ltd., Real Estate Brokerage
PRICE: $350,000
THE PLACE: This 27-year-old, 1,329-square-foot log-cabin cottage sits on the North Channel (the lake above Georgian Bay and Lake Huron) and comes with two bedrooms on a whopping 1.74 acres of land. At only $350,000, this property is a bargain for frugal summer-property buyers. Not convinced? This axe-wielder’s dream (or the perfect spot for someone who just likes to pretend) is homey and rustic (it has a wood-burning stove), qualities that so many modern cottages lack nowadays—anyone looking for granite countertops, turndown service and a tennis court will be disappointed.
BRAGGING RIGHTS: The master bedroom features four massive triangular windows that look out onto the lake, acting as perfect complements to those too-many-gin-and-tonic days where you may not actually want to move from bed to take in those spectacular sunrises. Clearly this is the best part of waking up, contrary to what the Folgers people might have you believe.
BIG SELLING POINT: This cottage is equipped with heaters for year-round operation, so come winter, you can pretend you’re in Helsinki, running from the authentic wood sauna to the snowy lake and back; in the summer, fruit trees abound (suck on that organic lemon, Loblaws).
POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER: The cottage is very far north—almost in Sudbury—so the drive will take the wind out of the sails for many a weekend warrior looking for a quick getaway. Those that can get past the commute time will be enveloped by the not-as-rowdy-as-Muskoka paradise.
BY THE NUMBERS:
• $350,000
• 2 bedrooms
• 1 bathroom
• 1.74 acres
• 2-car insulated garage with a studio for extra sleeping accommodations

If it’s on Manitoulin, you actually have to drive 1.5 hours *past* Sudbury to get there, unless you take the ferry from Tobermory.

July 18, 2011 at 7:54 pm | by TanyaI’d like to be friends with the caption writer, but I think he/she must be about 15 years old. At least I hope that’s the explanation for the many inaccuracies that have accompanied the captions for the “House of the Week” and “Cottage of the Week” posts. As far as I can see from picture 6, this cottage does not have a fireplace. That is a wood burning stove. Clever, yes. Informed, no.
