QUOTED: Rob Ford on what he’d like to do with road tolls
I’m totally, 100 per cent opposed to toll roads. If they want to float it—I’m going to sink it.
—Rob Ford, on how he’d respond to Josh Matlow’s contentious proposal to use road tolls to fund transit projects. Speaking at another city app unveiling, the mayor finally weighed in on what Doug Ford has called the “three attacks” on Toronto’s cars (that is, Matlow’s toll proposal, Metrolinx’s vote in favour of four LRT projects and the chief medical officer’s suggestion to lower speed limits). Despite the Metrolinx board’s approval of the LRT plans, Ford—predictably—said he wouldn’t stop fighting for subways because they’re “what the people want.” But the mayor saved his most eloquent response for the idea of making Toronto’s speed limit 40 km/h, an idea he called “nuts, nuts, nuts, nuts. No.” [CBC]
Hey, I wasn’t entirely sold on the idea of lowering speed limits (I just took my driving test again, at 33, and let me tell you, it’s unnatural to drive even below 50), but seeing how much it pisses him off, I might be persuaded, hahaha.
the weigh his weightloss campaign is going, he should have no problem sinking this one…
if they did a weighted average of council votes he and Doug would definitely hold the balance of power
Dangerously Overweight Ford would sink anything afloat.
But seriously, how can this idiot continue to believe that municipal government can continue to provide service without revenue if he refuses to raise taxes?
I have been all over the world and road tolls are normal. Even Ontario has a pay as you go road, the 407. Our Mammoth Mayor needs to stop pandering to the brain dead Ford ” I won’t pay for anything if it is a tax, nor will I pay for anything that used to be paid for by taxes” Nation and start getting serious.
The gasoline taxes do not pay for the roads you drive on. They go to the province and federal government revenue. Gasoline taxes do not even cover the cost of the 400-series of highways. They were not increased since 1992.
The Toronto property taxes pay for residential and arterial roads, DVP, and the Gardiner. Yet the 905 drive on them for free.
Rob Ford want NO tolls, because he wants the 905ers to drive on Toronto roads for free.
If they really want taxes that GO train users for any ticket outside of skirts of Toronto should double and also at Toronto’s borders 905-ers should pay dues (just like 407) bill will be sent to all license plates registered elsewhere. We in Toronto pay premium for everything, housing, rent, insurance and these guys are electing for us idiots that are racking our city yet we are paying for this suburbia to go and live in their distant bedroom community. Please 905-ers apply your mouth elesewhere and invest monies in your communities, create jobs there, there will be no traffic in toronto, Toronto will get money from the stubborn ones and ALL PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED, well all, we still have to live with suburbia’s decidion to live with Fat Ford. So yes, we should also de-amalgamate and let those 905 peasants enjoy their own Ford representative and enjoy what they get with it.
Considering his political acumen, the only way he could sink anything is by attaching himself it.
So well spoken and so able to phrase a cogent argument against reduced speed limits. Again, role-model Rob, showing the kids how to behave and formulate an argument “Nuts, nuts, nuts”. Well said.
Dr. David McKeown’s idea may or may not be a good one. I’ve no reason to pay any attention to anything Rob Ford says on the issue, since he has not presented any EVIDENCE that he knows anything about death rate, speeds on roads etc.
If he is/was able to communicate something of value, perhaps he should do so.
