Russell Smith, better known as arts columnist and male style decoder at the Globe, is turning his pulpy novel Girl Crazy into a movie. The film is set for production in Toronto next year, with Smith writing the screenplay. “I swear and promise I’m not trying to get into movies just to meet hot chicks,” Smith said in a statement. “People have often told me my books read like blueprints for screenplays, so I’m very excited to be trying my hand at a real one.”
Girl Crazy is the story of an affluent, nerdy college teacher who gets caught up in the tawdry, criminal underbelly of Hogtown after getting a hard-on in a park from a 20-year old stripper. Like Smith’s other books (How Insensitive, Muriella Pent, Diana: A Diary in the Second Person), it has lots of sex, which means audiences will again be treated to the horny side of Toronto.
