Canada’s Got Talent, Episode 16

In this results show episode of Canada’s Got Talent, host Dina Pugliese is the focus of our attention, instead of the somewhat hammy judges Measha Brueggergosman, Martin Short and Stephan Moccio. The statuesque Pugliese shines in a purple column dress, and she proves that Brueggergosman won’t always eclipse everyone else with her kooky hairdos (her side ponytail—outfitted with what we presume to be extensions—looks inspired by Princess Leia’s slave girl hairdo). Pugliese takes some friendly ribbing from Short, who jokes “You’re beautiful. Whatever cosmetic surgery you’ve had, I would say 20 per cent more, then stop!” (It’s actually less offensive than it seems written down.) And did anyone notice that Pugliese has two bejeweled microphones—one white and one gold—for this hosting gig? Is one for the results show and one for the talent portion? We have so many questions about these microphones alone: Who designed them? How much do they cost? Is a special ruby and white diamond one being made for the finale?

When the contestants are called on stage, it’s obvious to us who is going home and who is staying. Ivan Daigle, the Dance and Illusions of Oslen and the Forestier family are the first up to hear the results: Oslen is the first off stage, and though we declared only yesterday that we aren’t fans of Daigle’s clichéd song, he clinches the fan favourite vote over adorable young violinist Jack Forestier. The only surprising bit is Ivan’s weeping-cum-bawling at the announcement of his victory—it’s a humbling moment for Ivan, but a humanizing one too (we still claim that his song is hokey at best). Next up to the stage is the Enigma Dance Company, hoop dancer Lisa Odjig and Mathew “The Emsee” Cathcart. While we admire her skill and art form, it is no shock to us to see Odjig go home first. After Odjig leaves the stage, the judges hem and haw over who they want to vote for until the obvious choice is made: The Emsee. We say obvious, because we think he’s the best of this week’s bunch, and Moccio and Short made it very clear on Sunday that they were buying what he’s selling. The only surprise comes when The Emsee becomes so choked up by the announcement that he can’t speak. We love men who can cry, but what do you think?
