Justin Bieber on sex, health care, abortion and how awesome Canada is

This being awards season, it must have seemed fitting to the folks at Rolling Stone to put Canadian mega-star Justin Bieber on the cover their current issue (that is, before he lost the Best New Artist Grammy to Esperanza Spalding). The Bieb’s hair may channel the cast of Jersey Shore, but the article inside delves deeper than mere primping. The Rolling Stone Web site provides a few details from the pop star’s interview. Vanessa Grigoriadis manages to get his views on the predictable stuff—sex, love, Canada—and a few stranger topics, including abortion and Korean politics. Here, our favourite opinions from the interview.

On pre-marital sex
Bieber maintains total neutrality with an answer that is sure to make fans swoon: “I think you should just wait for the person you’re… in love with.” Rumoured girlfriend Selena Gomez must be one lucky gal.

On Canada
Bieber gets patriotic and assures fans he has no plans to become an American citizen: “You guys are evil,” is Bieber’s initial jokey response to the question. Why such strong words? “Canada is the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills.”

On “Korea”
In a surprisingly hard-hitting move, Grigoriadis asks Justin which political party he would support if he were old enough to vote. Justin’s response? Decidedly less hard-hitting. “I’m not sure about the parties. But whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad.” We’re just going to assume he means North Korea.

On abortion
Justin doesn’t believe in abortion because, “it’s like killing a baby.” And in the case of rape? “I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.” A teenage response to a complicated issue—we bet there are more than a few people who decided right then and there that they’re not voting for Justin Bieber anymore.

UPDATE: The editors of rollingstone.com have added the following correction to the Justin Bieber story referenced above: “Due to an editing error, this story originally included an  incomplete quote from Justin Bieber. The full quote, his response to  whether abortions should be allowed in cases of rape, reads: ‘Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t  know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that  position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.’” (February 17 at 2:34 p.m.)

  1. With more than 50% of US teens agreeing with him (polls show they are pro-life – check it out yourself, you have google), it would seem he’s simply echoing what his generation understands: abortion is, like, killing a baby”

  2. Hooray for Justin! Here is a teen who is not afraid to share his moral values with the world even if some don’t agree with him. In this world where morals seem to be at the bottome of people’s list, it is so nice to hear stories like this! Abortion is the killing of a child, end of story! I commend you Justin.

  3. As a publicist I can only wonder where the heck Justin’s rep was standing during this interview? If any of our 16 y.o. opinions were shared publicly (not to mention first-page international news), I’m sure most of us would cringe a few years later. Not fair. He’s 16.

  4. And he is absolutely right that is what it is…face up to it…we have rights for everyone but not the unborn child.
