Awkward: Julia Ormond forgot Catherine O’Hara’s name in Emmys acceptance speech
The familiar faces of Glee, Mad Men, 30 Rock and Modern Family bedazzled and, thanks to Jimmy Fallon and some clever viewer input via Twitter, entertained at last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards. Our two Canuck reps, Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara, lost to Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul and Temple Grandin‘s Julia Ormond, respectively, but the latter’s shout-out to O’Hara in her acceptance speech provided the most titillating moment of the awards show. It went something like this: “Catherine, oh…oh…what’s your name? Oh…I love you.” After a few extremely flustered expressions of gratitude, Ormond apparently managed to recover O’Hara’s full name from her hippocampus, but we’re sure the inevitable after-party meet-up was more than uncomfortable.
It seemed to me that she was joking and pretending not to remember O’Hara’s name.
This was clearly done for tongue in cheek purposes – do you actually believe that ‘Catherine O’I-love-you’ was intended as anything but an homage to her fellow co-star? Use your head.
My immediate reaction was that she was joking after having just recited the full names of all the other nominees that weren’t in the same movie as her! Did she admit later that she had indeed forgotten?
What’s really awkward is that Ashleigh Ryan didn’t get an obvious joke.
the full quote was
“Catherine O.. What’s her name? O… Um.. No Catherine O you’re so full of wonderful. O’Hara, I love you.”
And you can even tell by her hand gestures and expression she was kidding around.
I too thought that Julia Ormond “forgetting” Caherine O’Hara’s name was done in jest, but I don’t think she should have done it. I’m sure Catherine did not appreciate it.
She was so CLEARLY kidding, I can’t believe anyone would not get that. If your job is to write about events like this, it actually seems malicious to me to suggest something that is so obviously not true. At least Catherine O’Hara has a good sense of humour!
I watched it too, and sorry, she was not joking,as far as I could tell. I could be wrong (we can’t read her mind) but it was definitely not “obviously a joke” as so many of you say. You are assuming it was but there is nothing that showed it.
For people who didn’t get the joke, I think it was a case of not getting the tongue in cheek humour. There was a clear distinction and indeed change in tone when after she feigned forgetting she said “no” and then added O’Hara. And the reason it wasn’t obvious is that it was SUBTLE humor!!!
