Joshua Jackson wins best actor Genie for movie with fake reviews

Joshua Jackson won a Genie last night for his role in One Week as a teacher who goes on a motorcycle road trip after learning that he has cancer. The movie is probably best known for the brouhaha surrounding its marketing last year, when ads for the film showed glowing reviews—reviews from YouTube users who had watched the movie’s trailer. Jackson, who brought his girlfriend, Diane Kruger, to the ceremony at—ugh—The Guvernment, was as surprised as we were. “I can’t believe I won something,” he said. But maybe we should have known better, because as YouTube user Mystereofidelic said in the ad, “Joshua is an amazing actor!”

  1. I see your point, however, the Genie Academy (?) and Canadian people obviously watched the movie and cast their votes accordingly. They’re not basing it on just the trailer and random YouTube comments, are they?

I would think that the Genie Awards have a little bit more class then that, eh?

  2. Regardless, he deserves the win. Though I’ve seen better performances from him over the years.
