Much loved, decades-old Yen Ching Palace replaced by much loved, decades-old Pearl restaurant

Fans of Pearl Harbourfront will be able to enjoy the same experience (sans harbour view) in Bayview Village after the restaurant completes renovations on its new location. Owner Kim Mak told us the uptown offspring would be opening in mid-November, with a similar but smaller menu to compensate for the much-reduced seating. Mak says he chose the neighbourhood because many of his current patrons live in the area. Pearl is moving into the space left vacant by Szechuan restaurant Yen Ching Palace, which had also served hungry Torontonians for decades. Reportedly, the restaurant finally closed its doors because the owners wanted to retire after many years of running the popular restaurant. While we welcome the new and shiny Pearl, we’d also like to propose a sweet and sour sauce toast to the old Yen Ching.

  1. We are already sorely missing Yen Ching Palace, it’s great food and friendly staff. The shock and sadness we experienced when we found it boarded up was profound. So, so sorry.
Thank you, Yen Ching Palace for the many years of pleasurable and delicious memories.

  2. Wow I’m really going to miss Yen Chings. I’ve been going there since I was a kid and its always been my favourite Chinese restaurant in the world. Too bad I couldn’t have had one last feast before they left.

Cheers Yen Chings Palace I will always remember you!

  3. Oh how sad I was to see that Yenching Palace restaurant was gone!! That was my absolute favourite Chinese restaurant to go to and I’ve gone for over 20 years, and I just don’t know where I am going to go to get my Szechuan Meat Sauce Noodles, my shrimp fried rice or Lake Tung Ting Shrimp!!! :( Words cannot express how sad I was to see that. It was a true Toronto treasure and I will forever miss it. Staff there were always friendly and courteous, service was quick and efficient and the actual restaurant itself was always clean and welcoming. It is truly the end of an era.

  4. To the staff, owners and chef of Yenching,

My family and I loved your food and your service. We wish you the best of luck in the future, but know that you will be sorely missed.

Your restaurant was one of our favorites.
