The results are in for the first annual Canada’s Best Restroom Award, and they’re disappointing: Burnaby’s Cactus Club Café—the kind of cheesy-swanky restaurant Michael Scott would go to for lunch—has bested all of Toronto’s washrooms. (We never thought a place with the word “cactus” in its name would be an inviting place to plant a naked bum, but here we are.) Hogtown takes the second, third and fifth spots, with Spice Route taking the silver and Mildred’s Temple Kitchen getting the bronze. The Metro Convention Centre got fifth place.
The winning washroom, part of Rob Feenie‘s pan-ethnic Western Canadian chain (tuna tataki, cajun chicken fajitas and beef carpaccio are on the menu), has red wood panelling and backlit wall art, as well as leather armchairs and pristine white loveseats. Apparently, this was good enough to edge out Spice Route’s weird sink-and-all individual loos that look out on a private, poorly kept garden and Mildred’s let’s-have-sex style booths.

When Spice Route first opened, they did indeed have the coolest washroom. However, to the “committee” who is giving out this award, you have obviously never been to Spice Route on a Fri-Sat night. The washrooms are disgusting, especially after 9 pm! The last time I was there, the toilet was overflowing and drunks from a bachelor party had urinated on the floor beside the urinal.
