Few sandwiches have received as much attention as the Double Down, KFC’s grease-fest that features bacon and cheese squeezed between two pieces of boneless fried chicken. Morbidly curious Torontonians interested in trying it, however, were disappointed to learn that their local Colonels were not selling the thing. Well, that’s all about to change. The Double Down will be available in Canada from October 18 to November 14.
A press release about this non-event tells us that 47 per cent of Canadians want to try the artery-clogger while 64 per cent of Canadians think the Double Down should be available here—if not to eat, then to watch their co-workers slowly get fat. See, the sandwich has 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,740 milligrams of sodium. (To compare, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese from McDonald’s has 530 calories, 28 grams of fat and 1,110 milligrams of sodium. A Whopper from Burger King has 670 calories, 40 grams of fat and 970 milligrams of sodium.) Its bunlessness, however, means that Double Down is Atkins approved.
We’ve also been advised that there will be a wall of shfame section on the sandwich’s Facebook page where diners, in what will surely be the finest moment of their lives, can post photos of themselves with the Double Down.
We know what we’ll be giving thanks for this weekend.

October 9, 2010 at 6:39 pm | by DYou can get this sandwhich grilled, and ask them not to season the fillet before they cook it. Problem solved (and sounds delish).
October 12, 2010 at 11:25 am | by AlexandraAlexandra…how do you know this?!?!? I don’t know anyone who has personal “inside” knowledge about KFC and it’s cuisine…do you work for them?!? No, seriously, I had no idea one could opt for “grilling” and “no seasoning” etc. at a KFC. Mind you, it’s been quite some time since I’ve sampled their wares. If you’re right, Alexandra, and it sounds as though you know what you’re talking about…I might actually try the “grilled” version minus the salt!! Problem solved? Well, certainly partly (but it’s probably still not the best thing in the world to consume!!) but I totally agree with the “sounds delish” comment!!! It does, the way you’ve helped me envision it now!!! Thanks!!! I can hear “foodies” and “haute cuisine” snobs all over the City gasping in horror……..and that makes it all the more “delish”!!! Tee hee…………let’s Double Down, Alexandra!!!

October 14, 2010 at 9:45 am | by laurieWhat KFC does very well is their grilled chicken. Too bad Canada never got to experience this!
October 14, 2010 at 7:12 pm | by brooklin99I NEVER eat KFC, and this new sandwich is one reason why!! The ONLY time I might break my rule is for their boneless chicken wings, but the one time I did try them, they charged a MINT for a few of them, so I doubt I’ll ever order anything from them again!!
