Put down the fried butter, because this is the greatest food news we’ve received all week. Salad King, the cheap Thai restaurant that has been feeding downtowners for nearly two decades, is planning to reopen in December—just in time for Ryerson students to start cramming for exams.
The home of the 20-chili ordering system was shut down when its former building collapsed in April—the structure was eventually declared a heritage site. As the city and the owners of that old pile figure out how to preserve it, Salad King is hightailing it across Yonge Street and will open in the space above Foot Locker. Meanwhile, diners who miss the nouveau Thai creations by owners Ernest Liu and Linda Fung can visit Linda (the fancy Salad King) at Shops at Don Mills, though paying $16.50 for pad Thai just isn’t the same as eating an $8 version of it out of a Styrofoam box in a dorm.

Why does everyone love Salad King so much? Yes, I have been, and to be perfectly honest, it’s OK. I suppose it’s reasonably priced, but it’s not WOW-worthy.
