Salad King restored to throne; Ryerson students look forward to eating again

Crumbled kingdom: the Salad King's former home (Image: Matthew Fox)

Put down the fried butter, because this is the greatest food news we’ve received all week. Salad King, the cheap Thai restaurant that has been feeding downtowners for nearly two decades, is planning to reopen in December—just in time for Ryerson students to start cramming for exams.

The home of the 20-chili ordering system was shut down when its former building collapsed in April—the structure was eventually declared a heritage site. As the city and the owners of that old pile figure out how to preserve it, Salad King is hightailing it across Yonge Street and will open in the space above Foot Locker. Meanwhile, diners who miss the nouveau Thai creations by owners Ernest Liu and Linda Fung can visit Linda (the fancy Salad King) at Shops at Don Mills, though paying $16.50 for pad Thai just isn’t the same as eating an $8 version of it out of a Styrofoam box in a dorm.

  1. Geez, we had to join Salad King Anonymous to handle the withdrawal pains.

Is it worth getting hooked on this stuff all over again?

  2. Some of the best news that I’ve heard all day! Friends were visiting from Montreal and New Brunswick and I was so upset that I couldn’t take them to Salad King. Love that place.

  3. The staff here at Curriculum Advising at Ryerson has long been awaiting the re-opening of Salad King. We are sooooo happy the wait is over. Where would Toronto be without it???
A sad state of affair I’m afraid.

  4. Why does everyone love Salad King so much? Yes, I have been, and to be perfectly honest, it’s OK. I suppose it’s reasonably priced, but it’s not WOW-worthy.
