Happy feet: foldable ballet slippers for the reception party

We’re at the end of Wedding Week on torontolife.com, and we’re capping things off with this nuptial-themed edition of The Find. Many brides and bridesmaids feel obligated to wear heels on the big day but find them unbearable by the time the reception dinner is over. These leather ballet flats fold in half and fit into a four-by-four-inch silk pouch that easily tucks into a purse until the heels come off. We like the gold version, but they’re available in other wedding-friendly colours, like silver, rose gold and red.

$55 U.S. (plus shipping) at shop.yosisamra.com; $65 at TNT Blu (in store next week), 87 Avenue Rd., 416-975-1810, tntthenewtrend.com.

These coats are Canadiana at its finest

It might be March, but winter is hardly over, and these custom-order handmade wool coats from the Northwest Territories make cold snaps slightly more bearable. The jackets are available in Toronto thanks to Sandy Rubin, who 10 years ago was sent on a reporting assignment up north. A self-declared “city girl who hates the cold,” Rubin cursed her editor until she stumbled upon a group of women sewing and stitching gorgeous ladies’ parkas decorated with northern imagery, like polar bears and kayaks. She bought one immediately and was complimented whenever she wore it in Toronto.

Rubin hoped someone would start selling them here, but no one ever did. “I finally decided I was going to have to do it myself,” she says, so she launched Mush!Mush! “I think arctic fashion is going to take off. These coats are genuine arctic wear with an urban tweak.” So far, the coats are available only on her Web site and at a few Rosedale home “parka parties.”

What a slice: a gorgeous toaster that’s fit for the best artisanal bread

Lately, designers have been rethinking the toaster, with results ranging from the sublime (this minimalist, transparent version) to the ridiculous (a dot matrix throwback that singes designs into the bread), and covering everything in between (like this one, which looks like a cross between a sex toy and a dish rack). And though those models might not make it far from the drawing board, they got us wondering which toasters are worth the artisanal bread we put in them. After all, next to stoves and fridges, toasters are one of the most well-used (and often underperforming) kitchen appliances.

Gilded vision: a made-to-measure tunic to wear before spring

Sushma Kilachand is an expert at creating modern Indian-influenced pieces. The former L.A. Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising student moved to Toronto from Mumbai and started creating gorgeous clothing under the Sushk label at her home just off Danforth Avenue. We love this winter-appropriate tunic ($275), which is made from 100 per cent silk, with a hand-gilded neck adornment. The best part: Kilachand makes each piece to measure for every client.

For orders, contact Kilachand at 416-897-5776, sushk@hotmail.com or visit sushkdesigns.com.

Feet first: slippers that double as art

Mjölk has been open only a few months, but the Scandinavian lifestyle shop is already on every Toronto design nerd’s list of favourite decor stores. For the uninitiated, here’s another reason to visit: ultra-comfy slippers from Sweden’s Pia Wallén, a brand-name designer and artist in her home country who works largely with felted wool. Available in several bright colours, the unisex slippers are inspired by winter boot liners and are one of Wallén’s best-known creations. They’re just the thing for keeping feet warm on polished concrete floors.

$75 at Mjölk, 2959 Dundas St. W., 416-551-9853, mjolk.ca.

Fully loaded: this men’s coat from Buckler is now 70 per cent off

bucklerWinter warriors should check out this sleek model from Andrew Buckler. Aptly named the Gun Coat, it pairs a classic overcoat silhouette with fashion-forward metal detailing, playing up the military theme that flooded the runways last year. Made from a heavyweight wool and polyester blend, the coat promises to keep its wearer warm down to about minus 10 Celsius. Available in black at $149 (70 per cent off its original $745 price tag), with or without the accompanying scarf ($28), this jacket is the best winter friend man has had since St. Bernards stopped carrying casks on their collars.

Buckler, 700 Queen St. W., 416-551-8441.

Foiled again: a shimmery tee that gets better with age

parasuco-shirtThe holiday party season may be over, but that’s no reason not to sparkle on an evening out. This scoop-neck cotton-spandex tee has a foil coating that has been melted onto the garment and vacuum-sealed to achieve the creases and folds. As it wears, the shirt will take on its own look, with the foil finish developing an aged patina—chipping, cracking and flaking—making each top completely individual. Buyers are even encouraged to distress the foil by hand for a rough-hewn look.

On sale for $39.98 at Parasuco, Yorkdale Mall, 3401 Dufferin St., 416-782-8588.

Face forward: the perfect foundation for women who hate wearing foundation

perfektWe don’t often write about cosmetics and skin products on Style, but we’ve been using Per-fékt’s skin perfection gel for years, having smuggled it in from the States until it was made available in Canada a few years ago, and we’re surprised that the product has remained fairly unknown.

It’s essentially a liquid foundation made from an ultra-light silicone formula that evens skin tone and fills in large pores and fine lines with basically no effort—it melts into the skin. For foundation and powder wearers, it can be used as a primer to create a smooth base, but women who prefer a more natural look can use it (in a clear or tinted formula) alone for a glowing mug. Both water and sweat resistant, the gel is fragrance-free and enriched with vitamins A and E.

$65 at Sephora. Eaton Centre, 220 Yonge St., 416-595-7227, sephora.com.

Snake charming: Daniel Espinosa cobra cocktail ring

CobraringReptiles have always creeped us out, but we’re reconsidering our aversion after finding this cobra ring ($565), part of the Myths and Fantasies collection from Daniel Espinosa. The stones, hand-set cubic zirconia fused with different metals to achieve the rich colours, sit on a base of sterling silver (both regular and oxidized, for a black finish) and 24-karat gold. Serpentine jewellery is all the rage right now, from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s line for British luxury goods retailer Asprey to the more affordable rings at Club Monaco. Snake handling has never been more glamorous.

Furry friends: ultra chic rabbit-fur arm warmers

furArm

These rabbit-fur arm warmers by Montreal furriers Martine et Bonal are the ideal accessory for cold-weather warriors. Available in black, chocolate brown and navy (the natural-colour version is already sold out), the sleeves pair with this season’s capes, shawls and three-quarter-length coats. Wear them in a chilly office, or get double duty by using them as toppers for winter boots (the elastic inside is incredibly stretchy). With these chic wraps, we’ll have plenty of places to go, so let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
